Tuesday 22nd May — Day 3

Sam Elliot

For today there are two official events scheduled. In the afternoon there are TV interviews with Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Sam Elliot, Dakota Blue Richards, and Chris Weitz. In the evening there is the Golden Compass red carpet party, with the cast attending.

This noon New Line also arranged a lunch for a select few, with Deborah Forte, Sam Elliot, Dakota Blue Richards, and Chris Weitz attending. New Line were so kind as to invite us along.

In the evening we attended the red carpet party, celebrating The Golden Compass and also New Line Cinema's 40th birthday.

Monday 21st May — Day 2

The Golden Compass photocall

Today was undoubtedly the most important day for New Line. Not only was there the photo call, but also the press conference, and finally the roundtable interviews.

Even though we aren't such experienced photographers we were allowed to attend the photo call, and you can view our photos in our Cannes gallery. The album also contains some pictures taken at the press conference, but as we weren't allowed to use flash they aren't as numerous or as sharp.

As soon as the photo call ended we had to attend the press conference. You can read our analysis in full, or you can simply take our word for the fact that nothing new really was really said. This was mostly due to the press present, the majority of whom were not yet familiar with the story.

There had been a bit of a mix-up with registration, so in the end we weren't able to attend the roundtable. However, we learnt from various reporters who attended that nothing ground breaking had been revealed. Some interesting quotes can be found in various news articles.

L!NK and I ended the day with an excellent dinner in a restaurant near the beach of Juan les Pins, before heading back to our hotel to work on the updates.

Sunday 20th May — Day 1

Beach

After moving hotels from Nice to Juan les Pins we set off for the day 1 of the Golden Compass press events at Cannes.

Not only did we spend some time enjoying the weather and the excellent food, we attended the press screening as well. Safe to say we were impressed. Ryan wanted to practice his 'taking notes in the dark' skill, so he transcribed all the footage.

We also found out that the extra scene added to the movie actually concerned the capture of Lord Asriel by the Panserbjørne.

Quite a few interesting press event listed for Monday, notably the press conference with the cast, where for the first time we will be able to hear their views on the production. As it's 4AM we're off to catch some sleep in order to prepare.

Saturday 19th May — Day 0

Pass

As there were no press events scheduled for today this post contains no information about The Golden Compass movie. You have been warned.

We flew into Nice late last night, so this morning we slept in before heading out from our small hotel around an hour or 11, arriving in Cannes at noon. The train was incredibly crowded, and the blazing sun really added to the joy of standing amidst a crowd of sweating tourists. Luckily it meant that we were greeted by Cannes as it's supposed to be: warm and sunny.

After a lovely brunch on La Croisette we stopped by the New Line press office; sadly most of staff were out, but most importantly we were able to verify our accreditation. New Line's suites, as with most studios, are located in the Majestic Barrière hotel which is undoubtedly one of the focal points of the Cannes festival; it was interesting to see all the frantic activity of the many journalists and movie professionals in and around the building.

The true scope of the hecticness truly dawned on us when, after some confusion whether or not we needed to be accredited by the Cannes staff, we ended up in the press centre: hundreds of people crowding and shouting, and as one staff member later told us tens of people pretending to be movie stars in the hope of acquiring a pass. Luckily it turned out that we didn't need any other accreditation, so we were spared most of the chaos.

We then walked past the marina to the city itself, and following a brief break in the WiFi-enabled park we continued our reconnoitering, running into two seasoned photographers at a café that served wonderful crepes. To our surprise they informed us that they and their colleagues had never heard of The Golden Compass, contrary to the popularity that all publications hint at.

By the end of the day nobody we had spoken with seemed to be aware of the press events, which can probably be blamed on the fact that the screening and interviews are not official Cannes arrangements. Hopefully the news will start flowing in tomorrow when the first press screening commences, so check back tomorrow evening.

In the mean time I'll leave you with the picture of this brave cyclist, who practically cycled onto the red carpet at today's evening screening before being redirect by the traffic police.
