Re: Tom
I was thinking it was a love interest at first...because of the L instead of Lyra...but after much thought...maybe Tom is just someone she has confided in...who knows maybe Lyra just likes older guys!

Re: Tom
Ya, but she has grown up with all of the scholars in Jordan, and, with her being an adult at the time of the letter, would probably refer to them by their first names, because she is most likely to be a scholar soon herself.
So maybe Tom is an "outside" source, and one the PP would want to include in order to introduce in the BOD

Re: Tom
Its informal so its obviously a friend.
I need to reread the letter again. Forget what its about.

Engineers are really good at labeling and branding things. If they had named Kentucky Fried Chicken, it would have been Hot Dead Birds

Re: Tom
I don't think so, but he'd probably already have passed away by then, because he was already rather old in TGC, and this is some 10 odd years later.
Unless he's a trooper
Im just getting a feeling that "Tom" is a character that PP is going to embelish on in TBoD, because he could have written any other's name, such as a scholar (Dr. Polstead, for instance) but instead it's a "Tom" that we have never heard of before. And I also thought it was interesting how she signed her letter "L".

Re: Tom
Maybe it's someone she is related to? It's possible, she doesn't know any of her parents background, so I suppose he could be an Uncle or Cousin or something. Lord Asriel never actually said that he didn't have a brother, after Lyra found out about him being her father I mean.

"I see," she said
And she pushed him hard, so that he fell out of the machine.
