The Subtle Knife Sheath

So how is there a sheath for the Subtle Knife if it cuts through everything? Wouldn't it just cut through it?

The sheath is described as a stiff backed leather sheath with buckles.

The handle of the knife won't cut anything, so it's easy enough to buckle the knife by its handle, leaving the blade covered.

Yeah the idea is to lock the knife in place so nothing can touch the blade.
The sheath doesnt touch the blade.

I do wonder about how careful you need to be putting the knife in though.
One little slip and you've ruined the sheath. :)

The hilt stopped it from going down to infinity.

I see what you mean. Would the pieces have the power to cut like the whole blade? If so, some of them should have had enough force to fall into the ground and keep going. Eventually, inertia may stop them, but they could travel miles into the Earth before slowing down. How could Will even pick them up? And once he did, what would he do with them?

The pieces would have the power to cut like the whole blade, yes, but there are a lot of other considerations. Firstly, the blade would not be able to travel right through the Earth - it would be melted long before it reached 1/4 in - molten core, remember? Then, while it's perfectly capable of cutting through anything, you have to remember that it still relies on force - it's close, but it isn't a frictionless cut. The friction on the edge of the blade would help slow it down, and then the force on the sides of the blade would cause enough friction to stop it.

Think of it like the way a ninja catches a sword in a samurai film - the sword can cut through the air without any resistance at all, and a great deal of force driving it. Yet it's possible for the ninja, if he times it right, to grab the blade and stop it by putting his palms on either side and pushing them together - the friction stops it. It wouldn't take very much at all to stop a fragment of a knife from moving.

Actually, a ninja can't catch a samurai's sword that way: the MythBusters disproved it. (The ninja's hands got cut every time.)

No, the knife pieces probably wouldn't fall down forever. But there's still the problem of storage. You'd have to lock them in place somehow or the first time you dropped the box it would be ripped to shreds.
