Book Signing

Postby ArG » Tue Jun 08, 2010 11:06 pm

Does anyone know if Philip Pullman will be doing a book signing anytime in the future? I have a 1st edition of the Golden Compass that I got on eBay.

I doubt it to be honest... Usually a book signing happens when a new book is released, and Pullman's just done that with The Good Man Jesus And The Scoundrel Christ in Oxford, UK.

Due to the nature of The Good Man, it's highly unlikely that there will be any other significant public events- this one was only really made possible by virtue that Pullman was doing a speech at the Oxford Literacy Festival, it wasn't officially a book signing, and the book wasn't released yet, the only people that had them were press, and the more resourceful fans.

You next chance will be when The Book Of Dust is released. The fans have been chasing this book for a long time, but I have it on good authority that Pullman is now actively working on it again, having finished The Good Man.

^unless there would be a public event where more writers would go to. But have no idea if Pullman would go to such events :)

Pullman doesn't like public events, in my opinion. He likes a good conversation, I could tell that much from his discussion at the Oxford Lit Festival, but I was at the press conference afterwards, and he couldn't wait to get out.

He's a quiet guy who keeps to himself, and these days I think he finds himself surrounded by idiots who misinterpret or distract from the point of what he's trying to say.

At this point, I'd doubt he'd find a lot of value in public events anymore...he knows no one is listening for discussion. They're not idiots so much as pre-formed conclusions waiting for the opportunity to get there. Besides, you don't need a signature, the book itself is worth far more and says far more than just a scrawl.

^I agree, most people only care for the signature, to show that they 'met the writer'.

Ok, well if you think it's good without one I'll just take your word for it :)

Right you are, Anouk2007.
Also, Pullman doesn't seem the public type, as Latency said, however, he seems like a person you'd love to attend a conversation or interview with, since his opinions are fascinating.
