How do YOU all pronounce Iorek?

Postby panserbjorn.in.armor » Sat Feb 24, 2007 2:25 am

I say ee-OR-eck, but I don't think it's right. This is coming from the person who spent four years saying "Hermy-own", even after J.K. Rowling wrote "Her-my-oh-knee" into the books. I'm better now, though.

eye-OR-ek is the most syntactically sensible (sibilance!) way of pronouncing it from an English point of view (which I am. hee :) ). And lo, I vote for that.

Some of the people that read for the audio tapes get the pronunciation wrong, like Stephen Fry.

*slap* Stephen Fry is not a smeg head. He's an amazing chap. However, he does get the pronunciation wrong, that is very true.

I say EE-or-eck, but I haven't ever heard any audio books and I'm Czech, so... :?:

hmm... i say Eye-Reck usually, and i just leave out his second name
I Heard That You Were Depressed
By A Little Bird That Was Severely Hurt,
As It Did Not Notice My Window,
It Just Flew Wherever The Wind Blows...
As It Convulsed On The Pavement
It Whispered "I Am Hated..."

I Said "Say It All,

I believe it is Yo-rek, because the armored bears are from the far north, and that's how they say stuff up there.
Sure, Neil. No problem. We'll end the season with the Pachenga.

That is really facetious. Obviously Pullman is from this world, and in this world, Scandinavian pronounciation would make Iorek = YO-rek.

It's Yo-reck, Yorick. As in the "alas, poor" variety of skull.

Sorry I missed this thread for so long. I won't lock, but before the direction tries to skew in this thread, if anyone wants to go that way Here's our overall pronunciation thread.

Yo-rek was the closest thing in the poll to how I pronounce it, but I think that spelling (Yo-rek) is a bit ambiguous, as it sounds like "yo" as in "yo-yo", followed by "wreck". I pronounce it "Your-eck", which I think it how that item on the poll was intended, but I felt it needed clarification.

how did my poll get changed??? I tried and it said you couldn't, since that would be rigging if you could change a poll halfway through. I certainly didn't do that, though thanks to whoever did.

It's definitely Yorick. (YOUR-ik). That's simply how it's pronounced in the Nordic languages.
