I am looking at the 10th anniversary edition of "The Amber Spyglass". I can't figure out what Pullman's drawing at the chapter title is supposed to represent. I can see it as the roof thatch that Mary is help the Mulefa apply to their roofs. It could even be falling dust, I suppose. So, I need help figuring out what it is.

I dont think PP's website mentioned anything about TAS's chapter picture, how weird! I men.. it's got TGC and TSK, nothing about TAS!

I know. From what I read, the pictures weren't part of the original publication of TAS -- there were just the epigrams. Then, for a later release (the 10th anniversary edition, I think), Pullman added the pictures to TAS. They never made the web site, though.

Yeah, I thought so. Because before 2007 I read the US trade paper version, which has no pictures at all, only the chapter quotes. good job.

Weird my book doesn't have drawings it has quotes from various poets and writers. Only for TAS the other two have drawings.

Yep. I got the 10th anniversary edition. And the previous ones hasn't got any chapter pictures for TAS.

I don't have the books with me so I don't remember what happens in chapter 10. I'd have to guess its a thatched roof, but its hard to be sure.

I just reread chapter 10 to try to figure this out but the meaning utterly escapes me. I'd certainly like to find out what this picture is.

I know it looks like a face, but somehow I don't think it was meant to be. If it was supposed to be a face, he would probably have just drawn a realistic face, like the drawing he did of Lyra.

I haven't got my copy of TAS to hand, but is Chapter 10 where the I Ching is mentioned could it a picture of yarrow stalks used for the I Ching?

I think it's the I Ching. I wish I could see those pics from the 10th Anniversary TAS. Like lots of people say, I've just got quotes too. GGGRRRRRR!

I thought it was the roof thatches that they were weaving, but you guys are probably right about the I Ching. That would make much more sense.
