The subtleties in Lord Asriel's character are amazing.
Engineers are really good at labeling and branding things. If they had named Kentucky Fried Chicken, it would have been Hot Dead Birds

It may seem a bit obvious but I have to vote for Lyra. She is the central character in the books and if she wasn't a strong, well written figure then the story would not be as powerful. She has the right blend of bravery and sensitivity, not to mention loyalty. And she's feisty.

Mrs. Coulter and Lee. I feel Mrs. Coulter was developed the best, but Lee was just so damn awesome. And his death made me cry...almost -_<
Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
I think it is either Iorek Brynison or Lyra Belacque? Which one?

Mrs. Coulter is BY FAR my favorite character. Probably because she is just soooo complex and there's a lot to her personality and character. I'd love to see a companion novel about her life before Lyra.
Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
Let me see:
Iorek Byrnison: I like the way he is portrayed; while most anthropomorphic animal characters have human like personalities he is completly different, and I like him because I feel I'll never be able to understand him, which fascinates me.
Marisa Coulter: She is far from the steryotypical femme fatale; while she's manipulative and possessive she's also a protective mother (too protective for my taste) and a passionate lover, so that cocktail of personalities and character development (from a member of the church to a rebel) pleases me.
Lee Scoresby: He is an amazing character; its impossible to hate him!

I love His Dark Materials and Circles. Both remind me that being alive is more important than go to Heaven.

Plus, MC is the most complex charecter that i have ever read about, it was interesting to read about her in HDM
Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
I really have to go with Iorek even though in the books he comes across as emotionless you still care for him just like all the other characters(thats hard to pull off) without making the character look heartless but Iorek is certainly a heartfelt character.
I also lve the way that Pullman describes the culture of the bears and how differnet they are from humans.

I think its will because i like the way he acts and me and will are very similar personality and are the same in a lot of others and that hes a strong character and powerfull
In that other oxford where she and Will had kissed Goodbye, the bells would be chiming too, and a nightingale would be singing, and a breeze would be stirring in the Botanic garden.

Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
Had to vote Lyra, IMO there's no other answer for that question all the other's are supporting characters. If she wasnt' an option, I'd probably vote Lee or Serafina
Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
My vote gose for Iorek brynison. I like his wisdom, his strengeh and his integrety. I like ther fact that when he is on your side you can't ask for a stronger ally. I would rather have him on my side then not.
Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
I vote for Will. He is my favorite character of all. Lyra is right beside him on my list, although I got to much to say about him.
EDIT: Never mind!!! I chose Lyra! I think she changed from a wild savage little girl, to a mature loving girl, who loves Will.

It's hard to choose. I like all of them, really. But, I think Lyra and Lee Scoresby are great.

Re: Who is the best-created character in HDM?
For some very odd reason, the best-created character IMO is the Boatman. Although "lyra's death" is probably the 2nd most tragic event in the trilogy , I actually felt more sorry for the boatman.
Although we never find out much about him, when i think of ASG, he always comes to my mind. He is probably supposed to represent Charon, the old man in greek mythology who took the people from the land of the living to the underworld. In anciant Greece, one had to burry people with a coin so that the dead had money to pay Charon to take them, or else they would wonder by the shore of the river for 100 years. The idea of paying to go to the underworld, gives the impression that the boatman is a greedy, evil man, but in HDM its the opposit.
I got the feeling that the boatman suffered as much pain as Lyra did when they had to leave Pan behind, in the book it even says "there were pitty is his eye", although he has been doing the job for 35,000 years, transporting countless people. He lives a life of misey and has litrerally been hated by everyone, so much that it barely affects him. He also at no point mocks Lyra for telling him that she would return to find pan, even though he knew it was impossible, he even agrees to tell pan that Lyra loves him.
The botamn also makes me wonder what type of a person he is, cuz all conscious beings have souls/deamons right? except bears, who therefore have no emotions(i think). However, the boatman does express little emotion, but he obviously cant have a deamon, which makes him more of a depressing character.
I loved what PP did with the boatman, since we always assosiate death with something evil, but in ASG we got a completley different view on the transition from the world of the living to the world of the dead.
