Golden Compass Director's Cut

Postby gxdiaz » Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:42 pm

As many of the people who went to see the movie I was terribly disappointed with the final version. I do not know if it was for monetary reasons, trying to keep the kiddy audience or for religious reasons but they basically destroyed the structure and most of the controversial issues of the book. Even though, the Golden Compass (Northern Lights) is considered children's literature, the book is subtle and complexed enough for an adult to fully appreciate . Actually I don't see it as a kids' book. Since its obvious that many scenes were shot that never made it to the final cut and since it is not sure that a second installment should be made, the only hope for loyal fans is a Golden Compass Director's Cut. All the material taken away or taken out of order should be[/size]appropiately included. If they finally decide to make a second movie I hope they learned some lessons from the first one.

I asked myself today why Weitz said, that his Director's Cut is 2 1/2 hour long without the ending?
His script which he handed in to NewLine was 156 pages long with (!) the ending, so without it would be about 136-140 pages which would made 140min.

If they make a director's cut then they won't do the sequels. Maybe they will do both.

I truly don't understand why WB/NewLine have decided not to do one yet ( not with the end Footage) its a guaranteed source of income since I would certainly buy it and a know that many other people would here aswel of course it would cost some money for reediting but they could certainly off set the cost with the DVD sales. I just truly hope that if the decide not to do the sequels that they at least give us a cut with the end footage restored properly. (one can wish I guess)

It's not necessarily a guaranteed source of income. It would coats a fair bit to manufacture, release, an advertise a directors cut on dvd. And if WB doesn't think it will earn enough of a profit to make it worth the investment they wont do it.

Yeah the ending of the theatrical version left me very unsatisfied. Bad way to end the movie, at least for the fans. For little kids it was good, but not the fans :)

They releases new Cuts of films like Elektra which was a flop. So I think longer version of golden compass is possible.

When the DC with the cut ending would be release then the sequels won't come.;) Because the edning was as we know for the beginning of film two.

If the original ending is the beginning of TSK, we don't need it be in TGC directors cut. Uh oh, I've started acting like the TSK is a definite. Damn, I hope I'm not disappointed.

Yep, with every post I read about TSK the movie, I start thinking it's more and more definite. Hmm, that can't be good. I'm expecting the worst though, so that if we do get a movie, I'll be SUPER EXCITED!

To what was posted in the media, the film was cut by the studio quite a bit earlier than it may have seemed. This meant that visuals were not all completed to a sufficient and presentable standard. To finish the visual effects on Weitz version of the film may prove to be prohibitively expensive. He's going to be handing in a version of the film and a budget to the studio; but he would be surprised if they agree to fund it. And they still hold the rights to the film, so that would be the only way a version would be completed. It's a great shame, but there it is."

don't ask for the source.

As far as I know Grumman was originally in the film, but then was later discarded along with all references.

There were various other scenes we had not heard about filmed, including Lyra hiding in a chapel from the Mgaisterium, an additional attempt on Lord Asriel's life at Jordn College, and every scenes was extended/included in the original cut, which was far more coherent and faithful to the book.

The original cut would likely have gained 12A in the UK and was approximately 165 minutes long.

I would love to see the version you're talking about. It sounds like it would be an excellent movie, but do you guys think that the studio will actually release a director's cut? Something in me doubts it :(

So tragic on what the film could have been i know i have said a number of times, but its so dissapointing that New Line did not releaze what they had.

Film or script? I don't believe any of that made it as far as film, but script cuts I'd believe. At least the severed head. Heck why not start the movie with a severed head. That's the money shot on TV shows like CSI.

I'd love to even see the unfinished version of this cut.

I think little scenes shot and later than after they saw some potions of it cut out.
I don't know if weitz could make a finished scene of it.

But in the end the scenes as it is in the movie now also is not that bad. There are worse things in it. or good not in it.;)
