Responses from Pullman: Needed
Hi folks, looking to gather together all responses from mail or email anyone has received from Philip Pullman. We'd like to be able to offer this as a section of the website.
Responses can be scanned or typed and should include the original questions asked (or near enough). Please post here to alert me. You can also email me at phit@hisdarkmaterials.org
Thank you very much to all forum members who are able to contribute to this!

(I have posted this one before somewhere else)
My question:
I asked why he had used the word Dæmon, because it meant demon in Danish, and if he had any special relations to Denmark, since he had used two Danish words in the books.
Answer:
Dear Anne Maria,
Thank you for your message. I used the word 'Dæmon' because it originally
meant something like 'personal spirit' or even 'guardian angel'. As for the
Danish words, I just made them up with the help of the dictionary.
Yours,
Philip Pullman

What is his e-mail adress?
I love His Dark Materials and Circles. Both remind me that being alive is more important than go to Heaven.

Re: Responses from Pullman: Needed
i've ever ask a question but there is no reply at all, or maybe he reply not to the email, or he answer it in faq?
Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool? at all?
Re: Responses from Pullman: Needed
If you emailed through the website I'm not sure that he always responds to them. I got a response but my questions were very brief and specific and possibly interesting to him.
We have a page of quotes from Pullman - that might answer what you're looking for, but otherwise I'm not sure. Perhaps it's something someone here knows if you'd post it?

I don't know much about the "His Dark Materials" books, only what I've read in reviews and articles, but I'm curious about the comment quoted here. Did you really mean to say that you feel that 80 years on earth (give or take) are more important than where you will spend eternity?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just wanted to know if I correctly understood what you were trying to convey.

You only get one shot of life, if there is a heaven then your going to it anyway.
Its the reason why religious people dont all commit suicide.
Engineers are really good at labeling and branding things. If they had named Kentucky Fried Chicken, it would have been Hot Dead Birds

Re: Responses from Pullman: Needed
i possted a question about the gallivespians yesterday on his website so would it be posted in the FAQS section?
"We have to be all those difficult things like cheerful and kind and curious and patient, and we've got to study and think and work hard, all of us, in all our different worlds."
Re: Responses from Pullman: Needed
But in the books... it says that you shouldn't waist your life, because religous people belive that when they die, they will go to a better place. So surly if you are religous and depressed, you have more of a chance then non-relgous/people who have read HDM at commiting suicside. Because you belive that if your life stinks there will be a better heaven waiting you, if you don't belive in it, then you know that you should try and turn your life around before you die, because there is nothing waiting for you at the other end. If you have read HDM then you know that you should build a republic of heven or some sort so when you die there will be a place for you as an atom, drifting to meet your dæmon. SImple at that
{Phew!} I've written more, {I know} well, wether you belive in Mr Pullman's book then so and so on, if not then... well, maybe you belive in your own little world of things that happen.
