What If We Had Dæmons...?
What If We Had Dæmons...?
I was re-reading the series (again) recently and this thought came to me...what if they had dæmons in our world? I know EVERYBODY asks that, but I kept thinking. My thought was that a person's safety, and other things, might depend on their dæmon's form. For instance, if there was a car crash and there was a woman with a bird dæmon and a man with one that was a butterfly...well, if they were in an accident, like I said, the butterfly would be crushed, probably, but the bird might have a chance of escaping, so therefore the man's in more danger. You see what I mean?
Other things, too--people with insect or lizard dæmons would be harder to 'read' because their Dæmon wouldn't have fur that would stand up, like cats for example, or humanlike expressions like monkeys. And some people wouldn't be able to ride bikes because they had Dæmon that were too big to fit and that couldn't possibly run alongside...
I could go on forever. But I thought this'd be an interesting thing to discuss. So, yeah...

Yes what if.
And you know, all these questions and asking what your Dæmon's form is or what a certain animal would mean as a form, or what happens to Dæmon when you die, or what if Dæmon suddenly became corporal, or anything else you can twist your brains around, on this 'Dæmon' board is on that website's forum.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Yeah, I know. I've been on that website before; I like it a lot.
But I was just wondering, you know, about scenarios in this world specifically...well, whatever. I've had that thought on my mind for a while and I figured I should share it.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Well... you.. uh... I suppose it would be better. You would know that you'd get along with people cus if they have something evil and horrid as their dæmon, you'd know that they weren't the best to be with. If you really want a dæ communtiy in say... your home and those around you, then tell everyone to go to the dæmon page. It won't be the same as Lyra's world. But it won't be exactly like the one you used to know. Somewhere in between.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Well, that's not really it...I tell a lot of people about dæmons. Most of them don't remember when I bring it up a second time. But really I just made this to make scenarios, like what-ifs...just for fun. I think life with dæmons would be impossibly better, so I love inserting them into life in my head, and I wondered if anyone else liked to speculate...make scenarios...etc.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
I rekon we all have Dæmon, but they are like will's, inside of us. I have named my Dæmon Keeshia (dont ask me what it means I just ike saying it!) and he comes everywhere with me. I can even sort of see him as a snow leopard or most often a ferret.
Most people think I'm odd having an 'imaginary friend' as they put it but I dont really mind!!
There is a link on 1 of these forums that tells you how to see your Dæmon. It helped me alot. (The end of TAS also tells you how)

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
We all have Dæmon, it's a matter of whether you begin communication or not.
If Dæmon were real, there probably would be some prejudice. For example, people might not trust me because I have a snake Dæmon but they might trust someone with a cute bunny form.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Oh, I agree that they're real. No doubt about that! And I know it would cause problems, but in my opinion the pros far outweigh the cons. I just put this up because I like thinking of "dæmon scenarios" and thought other people might want to join me.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
what about films, where people are pretending to be other people? You wouldnt be able to, because your Dæmon couldnt change to fit the character's personality.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Our entire society would be completely different - we may not even have film or television. Maybe they'd still have plays as the main form of entertainment... I guess they could hide their Dæmon.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
wouldn't be realistic though would it? everyone would freak out cause the 'characters' weren't 'human' or without Dæmon.
interesting though.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
I absolutely love the idea of dæmons being real in our society. But I think HDMforever has brought up some great points. Saftey would be an issue, and some hobbies would be limited. However, I disagree with lizard dæmons not being able to show the same emotional range as an animal with fur, since most are capable of showing it in the wild, whether it's changing colours, hissing, raising flaps of skin etc. I wouldn't know how I'd cope with my dæmon. The official dæmonater on the golden compass site told me that my dæmon was a Tiger. A pretty huge animal to have in my little house, and to take to lectures. But at least it'll be more handy in that car crash you mentioned lol.
Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
I'd still totally keep a tawny owl and take it everywhere I go, dæmon or not

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Aaah, read back about the films scenario. Perhaps since they have fantastic special effects resources, if they need a different dæmon, they could find another person with that dæmon, to get the dæmon to react, and then use the special effects to put the human actor with another dæmon... just a thought.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
I actually thought of the whole actors/dæmons thing...I wondered about it, because even in plays it'd be an issue. Maybe they'd have to cast people with that dæmon, or unsettled actors and actresses?

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
I think animation would have probably become more dominant than live action in a world of visible Dæmon for that reason.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
yeah maybe. But I still think you could get dæmon actors to play parts and just film seperately. I mean, if you can get lindsey lohan twice in one shot (scary to think there's two) then I'm sure you can manage that.
Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
True...that would probably work for movies, you're right, and while they don't make too much effort in regular shows with special effects I'm sure they'd try.
For plays they'd probably...well, they'd probably just leave it, and assume people would understand, like they do for moving sets during blackouts and special effects and stuff.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
but if our world ahd Dæmon..it would probably have evolved completely differently. I don't think we can assume that things would be exactly the same as they are, plus Dæmon.
ALSO... Dæmon being the manifestation of the soul... nobody would bt able to argue that humans don't have souls. I don't think we can even begin to imagine how different life would be.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Yeah, the world would be totally different. But I shudder at the thought of them starting dæmon fashionwear... which I'm sure they would tbh. Still, people who don't know me would see me differently if I had a tiger dæmon. Raaaaw!
Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
movies wouldn't be too much of a problem they'd just film above the waist a lot more. the classic bad guy coming back to life wouldn't be possible though because it's pretty obvious the guy's dead. or for movies they'd pick a lot of actors with bug Dæmon and replace Dæmon with actual animals or use the Dæmon of extras that just happen to be close by in the background.
elevator rides would be a right hassle. Buying a family car would suck because the average size would be like a hummer. The way i see it everything would be a little bigger in terms of housing, beds, sofas .
In cartoons would anthro characters like Bugs bunny and daffy etc have Dæmon?

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Good point...I would think not, because even though having a dæmon means you're conscious (and therefore able to talk like those characters do), the general idea, in Lyra's world at least, is that having a dæmon makes you human. Those characters are animals, so I would assume that the producers would keep them dæmonless just to make it simple.

Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Yeah, no Dæmon for talking animal cartoon-characters, no no. Armored bears in Lyra's world don't have Dæmon, so other talking animals don't either.
My soul is shaped like an otter civet! Just check out those whiskers!
Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Definately agree about the cartoon characters, but there'd be horror films about people without dæmons. As for things being bigger, I guess it's true for cars, but they may make furniture for dæmons, like a side bed etc. A lecture theatre would be rowdy though.
Re: What If We Had Dæmons...?
Well, it all depends on the size of the dæmon...after all, you can get someone with a praying mantis or a person with a snow leopard, if you see my point, so maybe some cars would be the same size as they are now.
I agree with you about the horror movie thing...after all, isn't that what they're going for these days? Something so scary you can barely imagine it?
