The strict set of rules make it very tempting to start out thus:
And after Serafina Pekkala saved them from the angry children on the rooftop of the Belvedere, an angel descended suddenly.
"Hey Lyra, whats up! Move it or lose it, witches, I'm LANDING here." The angel spoke, rather like a teenager than the intelligent ephemeral being it was rumoured to be.
"You're an angel, right?" The question was genuine. She could see a form of the being, an altering of space and a suggestion of a human form within the brilliant glow, but even Pantalaimon nudged Lyra as they noticed with some certainty that the angelic fingers appeared to be picking the angelic nose.
"Yeah. But we don't deal with time well, so I get like confused sometimes. Also because we're made of such insubstantial stuff I pick up attitude from whoever I'm hanging with and let me tell you that last crowd was KAH.RAY.ZEE. For real, you won't believe - oh no, it's like...an inside joke, you totally wouldn't get it." The angel laughed at some remembered joke.
"Do you have a name?" Will spoke up, despite the pain of his hand knowing it would be easier to get the conversation on track if he could address the angel properly, and hoping it would be able to lead him to his father.
"Yeah. Xaphania. Total mouthful. Not sure what my parents were thinking, my friends called me Xaph if that helps?"
"Xaph," Lyra stepped forward, "This here's Will and he's hurt right now, is there anything you can do to help?"
"Nope. Outie!" The angel took to the sky, leaving Lyra and Will both puzzled.
