Dæmons and other worlds: Do you believe?

Postby LyraPanFan » Wed Dec 10, 2008 11:57 pm

Me and Ray were talking to a guy Sam, in our class. We were talking about dæmons. Well he suddenly got ticked off at our obsession with HDM, so he yelled: "Dæmons don't exist!". That kinda got me thinking later that night at home. I thought: "He doesn't know that, because he doesn't know for sure if there are parallel universes.". What I meant by that was, if parallel universes exist, anything is possible, so dæmons are possible.

So what do you think? Do you think Sam was wrong? Do you believe that there could be other worlds, maybe other worlds with dæmons? Tell me what you think about the possibility of dæmons.

In Pullman's HDM trilogy, dæmons represent the souls or spirits of humans, only in Lyra's world, they are a visible, tangible manifestation, almost an alter ego, so-to-speak. They're like that "other person" we talk to when we're talking to ourselves. So, in a sense, dæmons are real (assuming one believes in souls or spirits, and not everyone does) -- we just can't see ours like Lyra can hers.

I believe in dæmons, personally. I know a lot of people don't, and even I don't believe that we can see and touch them, but we CAN hear them, in the mental sense. I talk to mine all the time. :P And every time I have chance to wish I wish that people in this world could see dæmons. :)

Eh, I'm just obsessed. Ignore me if you like. :P

If our universe is absolutely infinite (as in, you can hop in a spaceship and go on forever, and there is no edge or end to space), it would seem to me that absolutely everything that could possibly be possible must have or will unfold at some time or another. Sound theories from respected physicists suggest that there may be parallel universes with worlds analogous to our own, so I believe it is possible.

As for dæmons, I don't believe that people literally have animal formed entities attached to them, visible or invisible. However, what Pullman's dæmons represent certainly are a very real component of the human experience.

Parallel Universes are a theory at the moment, but they haven't been disproved. I believe in them, and look forward to the day when we can prove they exist.

Dæmons, same as SuperTrainStationH, I don't believe in them literally, but the element of the human psyche they represent is very real.
I think it's perfectly acceptable to visualise this part of our minds as Pullman's Dæmon, but I don't do it myself, I keep it in the head.

I believe in Dæmon, but I'm skeptical about other worlds. However, if there are other worlds out there, they are wise in staying out of this world.

There are billions of things out there, and that's just in this universe. Is there anything beyond it? I think so. How could space just stop suddenly? It's hard to imagine, but it's also hard to imagine what's out in the unknown too. Space keeps going and going. Beyond our wisdom and imagination. Ow! I just got a headache from thinking of that. Oww! Who could deny that in the trillions of trillions of space, other form of life could exist? It's hard to turn away from. So yes, I believe in other worlds. We are not alone. If there are no worlds like Earth, then why are we here? We can't be the only ones. Impossible.
Dæmon definitely do exist, here and out there. But just here they are not, like many others say, physical. Just that nagging voice in your head. Don't be afraid of it. It's healthy and not crazy. The mental side of Dæmon is actually fact, not fiction. They are real, just not in a 'solid' form.

So overall, I do believe in other worlds and Dæmon. Anything is possible.
Harry: "Tell me one last thing. Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?"
Dumbledore: "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"

I don't believe in parallel worlds as such, but I do believe that we are not alone. The universe is HUGE and never ending, we can't be the only living beings in the whole entire universe. There HAS to be other life forms (I'm a total Doctor Who nerd...dont mind me)

Personally, I believe all works of fiction are other universes.
Which means with works of Fiction that have alternate universes in them, those universes exist too.
And the fiction in the fiction.
And South Park.
Which by proxy, would contain Imaginationland.
Which would contain all fiction.
Which would contain South Park.
Which would contain Imaginationland.
Which would contain all fiction.
Sssh, my common sense is tingling.

I like to think I believe in parallel worlds as the concept is pretty awesome, as far as it goes if I believe in that I believe in pretty much anything, Dæmon? depends what we are defining one as...

From my limited understanding of cosmology, I don't think that the universe is infinite in the amount of matter it contains. That would have required an infinite amount of energy present at the time the universe was born, when it was finite in size. So these idea about anything that is possible has happened in some part of the universe- I can't see how that is possible.

However, the entire universe is no longer casually connected. It is expanding, and vast majority of the universe is so far away from us that it is actually expanding away from us faster than the speed of light. This is not a violation of relativity because it is spacetime itself that is expanding. Anyway, since those parts of the universe are travelling away form us at faster than light speed, no information can pass between us and them, and thus, there is no casual connection. Those distant parts of the universe might as well be in another universe alltogether; it would make no difference. They are forever inaccessible.

If you could somehow freeze universal expansion, you might be able to travel in a straight line long enough to return to the spot where you started from... but because of the expansion, you can travel in a straight line forever, and always see new objects. The universe is not closed. You will, however, see the matter density continually decreasing as you travel through space and time. So even though there will always be a new galaxy coming up to see, forever and ever, the energy (and energy = matter) content of the universe is not infinite.

I probably made a few errors in this... I suppose that if the universe were expanding fast enough that from the time it was born, there were parts of the universe that were not casually connected with others, then the universe could be infinite in energy content. But I have to ask a philosophical question- if those other parts of the universe were never and can never be connected casually with our portion of the universe, do they really exist?

Sorry for the long essay... I just hate it when you hear some scientist talking about infinite energy content universes.

Well, people talk to Jesus all the time, and there is just as much evidence to say that Jesus exists as there is that Dæmon exist. So if you are crazy, so are they. That's what you should tell folks.

I do not believe in things for which there is no hard evidence. Furthermore, it is important to separate belief and faith. Beliefs should things you "believe" to be true. Faith is something you believe in with 100% certainty. Nothing is certain, so faith is not logical.

Personally, I talk to myself all the time. I am a little unusual like that. I have conversations with myself, and with people who are not there. Sometimes I even have debates with myself. I even sometimes refer to myself as "we" when talking to myself. It's a little odd, yes, I don't do it in public (I talk to myself in my head in public), of course, but it really helps me think and feel. I guess that if HDM were to be true, then I would be more in touch with my Dæmon side that most people. I wonder if Phillip Pullman does similar things, and that's what helped him to write HDM?

It's no wonder people find Dæmon so appealing, and want them to be true. Sure, I do as well. It appeals to the near universal desire of the ultimate friend and companion that understands you completely. But personally, I feel that it is important to never forget that this is just fiction; an appealing one, but fiction all the same. You shouldn't pine for things you can never have.

I believe it's very possible that there are other worlds and maybe in one of them there are Dæmon.

There are so many strange things out there, so many things we don't know, or understand, or can't explain. I don't see why Dæmon can't be real. Anything is possible.

I'm not sure if I believe in parallel worlds... I guess I believe they're possible, but we don't really have evidence either way yet.

I talk to my Dæmon, so I suppose I could be said to 'believe' in them, though I mostly just believe it is possible to create a mental construct centered around the second half of one's inner dialogue and calling it a Dæmon. ;) My Kouroh(who has been helpful to me psychologically) is just as real as any of my thoughts, and anyone can have a Dæmon, really... maybe not exactly like the books, but a Dæmon nonetheless.

There are alot of theories on multiverses and paralell universes, most of which I activley believe (and perhaps one day will prove the existance of. *cough*big*cough*ego*cough*). As for Dæmon, without a doubt there is something real about them. For years before I even heard about Dæmon I used to talk to myself (I was a bit of a loner but even I'm not that much of one...) and I would usualy talk about philosophy and other things like that. After I saw the film (REALY P*SSED OFF AT new line for what they did after I read the books!) I was hooked on the idea. If they always apear in animal form and "settle" as they do in Lyra's world is another matter.

I believe that there are an infinite number of parallel realities out there, and that in one of them Dæmon exist. In fact, I believe that anything that has ever been concieved of is possible in some other universe. Including all my favorite books and stories. Or any story.
