Get That Audio Book!
It's worth every cent!
35 hours in total, Philip Pullman being the narrator, supported by "some of the finest actors of the London stage."
The only peculiar thing about the production is that it's apparently based on the American version of the books and there are a few changes introduced (Stelmaria's eyes are described as "tawny" instead of "green") ...
Pullman is a very fine reader, the finest I have ever heard. The actress speaking Lyra is a miracle! The audio book is a dream!
I am currently listening to the first part, while reading the book which is perfectly possible because they changed almost nothing at all.

Just be sure to get the audio books and not the BBC dramatization. The latter may be good (which I don't think) but it is nothing compared to the audio books.
Anyone remembers the scene in "Lyra's Oxford" when Pullman describes how children are captured by the gobblers?
Well he reads this scene with such subtle changes in his voice that the scene seems even more brilliant: at first his voice sweetens when Mrs Coulter comes into actions and as his words describe her lovely appearance so does his voice. And then there comes this paragraph "Then she turned back inside (...) and threw the little bundle of letters into the furnace before leaving the way she had come." -- his voice suddenly turns cold, hard and pityless.

oh stupid me
I already own the sets for some reason I thought u were talking about something else (I've been spacing out a lot lately)! I know what u mean about them there so great! I've listen to each set about 6 times already! I love how there's a full cast performing them in them instead of just one person (like in the Lord of the Rings audio tapes its only one guy I find that really annoying) I makes it so much more interseting! I know what u mean about the part with mrs.Coulter is capturing the kids thats awesome!

I'd rather have a cd but tapes work ok i guess. I wish I could say I would never spend that much because I already have the books...but I know I will someday
Unfortunately they don't seem to exist on CD. At least, Amazon(.de) has only the cassette version. It's kinda annoying but better than nothing, certainly ...

Audible.com
Hi everyone! Just thought I would let you all know that Audible.com has all three books avaiable for download. Once you pay for them they are yours and you can put them on CD if you wish. I have not down a lot of reading on this matter and wonder what format it is. I feel like you could convert the files if need be for your vehicle. If you are a first time buyer they will take $20 off for the first buy.
celebdraug wrote:It is almost 11 hours in length. I know that other audio CDs take about that many. Other than using up 10 CDs, I really love it!
@Phit: notice, however, that this is only the first book! All three books together are about 30 hours long!

i know it confuses me too...i read somewhere that the reason Mr. Pullman doesn't like the Narnia books is because he felt like his old uncle was speaking to him...i'm sure it was just a figure of speech, but then again who knows?...
oh and i don't think there's an audio CD of it somewhere
...at least not that i know of

Well, there are many better reasons not to like those books and I think Pullman too has better reasons than this.

Hey check it out - cover to cover has the audio PP + cast version in CD (finally) for a mere 124.99 pound. Or you could go for the dramitisation in CD form for a heafty 39.99 pounds. Can tell just from the prices which one is expected to be better. Link:
