Official Movie Quiz Book and the Secrets it reveals!

I received a copy of "The Golden Compass: The Official Movie Quiz Book" at the trailer release party. It gives a great deal of information about the move. This book was printed before the changes were made, which may be why they were giving it away, but it's a good record of what the movie was before the changes. The information is probably still good, except for some of what is in this book not happening in the first movie.

Here's what I gleaned, omitting information that was obvious from the trailers:

Changes, Additions, Choices, Clarifications, and Confirmations:

Lyra usually wears leather boots at Jordan.
The Master and Fra Pavel are together in the Retiring Room talking about Lord Asriel.
The Master takes his academic robes out of the wardrobe.
In case it wasn’t obvious, Fra Pavel is the one who tries to poison Lord Asriel.
Lord Asriel uses glass spheres to project 3D photograms.
Lord Asriel says the Dust registered on Jordan College’s Dawkins Particle-Scope.
Lord Asriel takes Lyra to the College Garden after the presentation is over, Stelmaria carrying Pan in her mouth.
The witches, instead of the alethiometer, told the Master that there are prophecies about Lyra.
Lyra and Roger are up on the roof talking about the Gobblers and eating plums. They spit the plum stones off the roof and hit a Scholar, who drops the books he’s carrying.
Lyra promises to rescue Roger if he’s taken by the Gobblers.
Mrs. Lonsdale calls to Lyra to get off the roof.
Mrs. Lonsdale calls Lyra in to have dinner with Mrs. Coulter, and hurts her by brushing out the tangles in her hair.
The Golden Monkey goes under the table with Pan at the dinner in Jordan where they meet Mrs. Coulter and strokes Pan’s fur. Pan is white at the time.
Mrs. Coulter tells Lyra she’ll have to study Mathematics, navigation, and celestial geography to be her assistant.
Lyra isn’t ready to go with Mrs. Coulter in the morning because she hasn’t said goodbye to Roger, but Mrs. Coulter says the Magisterial sky ferry is about to leave and she can write Roger and send him a photogram.
The Master of Jordan is arrested by Magisterial Police for heresy.
The Magisterial seat in London is “the headquarters of the Magisterium.”
Lyra and Mrs. Coulter travel around in London by Magisterial carriage.
Pan finds a “list” in the trash at Mrs. Coulter’s apartment, which he initially thinks is “one of her stupid guest lists.” Implicitly, this list is what alerts Lyra to Mrs. Coulter’s connection to the Gobblers. It may be a list of kidnapped children.
Mrs. Coulter tells Lyra that she has to learn to control her Dæmon.
When Lyra and Pan escape from Mrs. Coulter’s apartment, the Golden Monkey’s paw is trapped in the window and Mrs. Coulter cries out in pain.
Ma Costa and her sons save Lyra from the Gobblers who’ve captured her with a net in a warehouse in the London docklands. In the process they kill one of the Gobblers with an arrow, and his fox Dæmon disappears.
Ma Costa definitely has a hawk Dæmon.
Ma Costa and Farder Coram tell Lyra what happened to Roger.
Lyra was taken away from her parents because “they weren’t married when she was born.” Not clear if this means they don’t get into the whole adultery and duel thing at all in the movie. If not, it whitewashes them but also means that the Magisterium is imposing very strict “moral” standards.
Lyra first meets John Faa on the Gyptian ship (The Noorderlicht)’s cabin, in the presence of Ma Costa, Farder Coram, and the chiefs of the Gyptian families, who are looking at charts and maps. She first curtsies, then shakes hands with him.
John Faa is called “King of the Gyptians.”
Farder Coram and John Faa are surprised to see the alethiometer because they thought all the alethiometers had been destroyed by the Magisterium.
Some Gyptians have been arrested by the Magisterium for breaking into the office of records.
Farder Coram tells Lyra that he can’t teach Lyra how to read the alethiometer because the art of reading it was closely guarded.
The spy-flies are brought to Mrs. Coulter in a wooden box.
The alethiometer gets dropped during the spy-fly attack.
One of the spy-flies attacks Lyra with a thin, deadly spike mounted on its head.
Lyra meets Serafina on the deck of the Gyptian ship. Serafina’s bow is made of cloud pine.
Iorek’s armor is being held in the Magisterium’s district office in Trollesund.
Lee stops Iorek from getting shot by the police.
Lee’s airship has two silver-gray balloons.
The alethiometer tells Lyra to go to a Samoyed trapper’s hut by a lake. On the way there, witches fly over Lyra and Iorek. At the hut, Pan doesn’t want to go inside, but they do and she finds Billy Costa, severed, looking for his Dæmon Ratter.
The Bolvangar official who greets Lyra has a praying mantis Dæmon.
There’s a picture of a tropical island in the Bolvangar canteen.
When Pan and Salcilia meet in the Bovangar canteen, they touch noses.
Lyra goes into the senior dining room to have privacy to read the alethiometer in Bolvangar, and it tells her not to let Mrs. Coulter have the alethiometer, or they’ll die.
Mrs. Coulter hits the Golden Monkey in the face in the zeppelin on the way to Bolvangar.
It is clearly stated that Dust enters through a person’s Dæmon.
The Head Nurse carries Pan into the operating room.
When Lyra awakes after the intercision ordeal, Pan is curled up with her in cat form.
Lyra destroys the silver guillotine in Bolvangar.
When Iorek attacks a Tartar’s wolf-Dæmon, the man dies.
Lyra is going to Svalbard when she “first” travels in Lee’s airship.
Lyra and Pan are thrown out of the airship in a snowstorm – no mention of cliff-ghasts.
Pan curls up in Lyra’s coat as a mouse when they’re lost in the snows of Svalbard.
Ragnar Sturlusson is indeed wearing jewels and golden claw decorations when Lyra first meets him.
Lyra tells Ragnar that the alethiometer is a “Dæmon mirror” – that Dæmon use it to see the truth in their own eyes.
Ragnar poisoned the old king and then beat Iorek in single combat – a significant departure from the book, and seemingly a bit of a white-washing of Iorek.
Ragnar uses rock to sharpen his claws.
Roger is “with” Iorek when he comes to Svalbard – this could be like in the books, where Roger comes to Svalbard with Iorek but stays away from the palace until the fight’s over, or he could come with Iorek to the fight. It’s not clear.
Ragnar does indeed lose his chainmail belly armor during the fight.
Lyra and Roger set off to find Lord Asriel in Svalbard in Lee’s airship. If this is different from their first flight, this means they get in the airship after the bear fight, and Lord Asriel’s prison is farther away than it is in the book. This might be where the movie ends.
In the old version, at least, the Aurora can be seen from Lord Asriel’s prison’s window.
In the old version, at least, Lord Asriel tells Thorold to run a bath, prepare some food, and then let Roger go to bed.
In the old version, at least, the alethiometer tells Lyra that Lord Asriel plans to hurt Roger.
In the old version, at least, Lyra and Pan were the last characters to speak in the film.






Quotes (that aren’t in the trailers to my knowledge):

Pan says he thinks that the big box in the Retiring Room is “a box full of none of your business.”
Lord Asriel tells Lyra Dust is “none of your business,” instead of “nothing to do with you.”
Lord Asriel calls Lyra “impossible to educate, a miscreant, and a liar,” and also compares her to an “alley cat.”
Lord Asriel points out that Lyra’s Dæmon hasn’t stopped changing.
Roger tells Lyra that he’s just a servant, but she’s a lady.
Roger says the Gobblers take poor kids and “orphings” and servant kids.
Lyra says Billy Costa told her about the Gobblers taking Gyptian children.
Lyra tells Roger she’s spying on the Gobblers for Lord Asriel.
Roger thinks the Gobblers take you down to Hell.
Lyra says the Gobblers are “canniboles” who take children to a farm to fatten them up, ready to be eaten.
Mrs. Lonsdale tells Lyra about the messy state of her knees and hair.
Mrs. Coulter is introduced as a friend of the college.
Mrs. Coulter says the only one who really, truly understood her as a child was her Dæmon.
Mrs. Coulter says she’s met Lord Asriel at the Royal Arctic Institute, where they supposedly discussed the political structure of the Ice Bears of Svalbard.
The Master says he is unsure that going to London with Mrs. Coulter is what Lord Asriel would want for Lyra’s education.
After a few days in London, Pan calls Lyra Mrs. Coulter’s new pet.
Lyra mentions “particles from the sky” to Mrs. Coulter, and gets in trouble for it.
John Faa says the Gyptians have been “hurt worse than most by the Gobblers.”
Farder Coram tells Lyra to “hold the question in your mind, but lightly, like it was something alive.”
Serafina tells Lyra that the Magisterium seeks to control “nothing less than free will.”
Lee tells the Gyptians to be careful transporting his airship, because damaging the “finicky” machinery could cause a fire.
The official who greets Lyra at Bolvangar tells her that “we help children grow up.”
A doctor at Bolvangar calls Mrs. Coulter “ghoulish.”
Ragnar calls Iorek “broken-hand, whimpering cub, and Soon-to-Die,” more or less like in the book.
In the old version, at least, Lord Asriel calls Dust “bigger and stronger than anything they could imagine.”

I looked it up. Noorderlicht means Northern Lights (as in aurora) in Dutch. I quite like those little touches like the Dutch influence to the Gyptians.

Hmm, Dæmon mirror? That's very interesting. Also, I wonder why they changed Iorek's backstory on how he came to be exiled.

Very nice, very positive article. And he's not just "one of the webmasters" - he's Lord Asriel, the founder! Anyway, I'm pretty sure the Magisterium comment was just to get the point across in the trailer that she's associated with it. No one who hasn't read the books will notice when they change it back in the movie.
