PHILIP PULLMAN is widely acknowledged as Britain’s most challenging and original author writing for younger readers. He also has a large adult readership and was the first children’s author ever to win the Whitbread Prize, in this case for the best-selling trilogy "His Dark Materials".
Darkness Visible is a concise but detailed book which analyses and discusses the different sources drawn on by Pullman in his brilliant and powerful work. It also links its main themes to Pullman’s own life and to his previous books.
The book contains sections on Philip Pullman, his life and work and on the His Dark Materials trilogy, from the basic plot to what it’s all really about. Darkness Visible looks at Pullman on Pullman, including his dislike of C.S.Lewis and criticism of organised religion, and there’s also a section on fantasy writing from Tolkien to Pullman.
The book will be enlightening and fascinating for all readers of Philip Pullman. It even provides an answer to the question, what exactly is “dust”?
NICHOLAS TUCKER lives in Lewes and was a teacher and educational psychologist before lecturing in Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex. He is the author of five books about children, childhood and reading, including The Rough Guide to Children’s Books 0-5 and 5-11, with a 3rd book on teenage reading to be published this year. He has also written six books for children, broadcasts frequently and reviews widely in the national press.
WIZARD BOOKS is the new children’s imprint from independent publisher Icon Books, best known for the best-selling Introducing series. Wizard Books was launched in June 2002 and publishes the million-selling 'Fighting Fantasy" series amongst other fiction and non-fiction.
