The Amber Spyglass
The third and final book in the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy
At the end of The Subtle Knife, with Will gone to find his father, Lyra has been kidnapped and their witch-party escort all killed by the spectres. The Amber Spyglass opens to Will Parry determing with the help of two angels, Balthamos & Baruch, to rescue his kidnapped companion. With the subtle knife in his posession, Will's quest brings him into Lyra's world where he joins the king of the panserbjørne, Iorek Byrnison in the effort to find Lyra. Together, they travel to the Himalayas and inevitably find Mrs. Coulter who has kept her daughter hidden and drugged asleep in a cave there. In a desperate attempt to rescue Lyra before the forces of either Lord Asriel's Republic or the Authority's Kingdom find her, Will unintentionally shatters the subtle knife but is able to rescue Lyra and escape through a window he'd left open for their escape. To the dismay of the children, they have been followed by two spies sent by Lord Asriel, Tialys and Salmakia. The spies are Gallivespians, a race no taller than a man's handspan who travel on dragonflies.
In the new world, Will and Lyra hatch a plan to go to the world of the dead where Lyra can talk to her friend Roger, who she'd been seeing in her dreams as she slept. With the knife repaired by Iorek Byrnison, the children and the spies travel to the World of the Dead, where Lyra is to carry out the prophecy she has been destined to perform since her birth.
In another world Mary Malone continues her research on Dust. She is living with a community of Mulefa, intelligent, practical, wheel-riding creatures similar to antelope.
In the final chapters of The Amber Spyglass, readers will be treated to uncovering the truth of the mysterious substance Dust, experience the sacrifices and betrayls made in effort to do right, and discover the final showdown between the forces of Asriel's Republic and the Authority's Kingdom.
