Cover

The first book in the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy

When Lyra's friend Roger disappears, she and her dæmon, Pantalaimon determine to find him. In Lyra's world, each person is born with a dæmon, a physical soul in animal form that can shift shape until adolescence. After overcoming obstacles including an assassination plot against her powerful uncle Lord Asriel and learning to read a mysterious truth-telling device called the alethiometer, Lyra's ensuing quest to find her friend leads she and her dæmon to the bleak splendour of the North. Here, armoured bears rule the ice and witch-queens fly through the frozen skies - and a team of scientists begins conducting experiments too gruesome to imagine.

Lyra overcomes these strange terrors only to find something more perilous yet awaiting her - something with consequences reaching beyond the reaches of the northern lights...
