Rights

New Line Cinema, the producers of The Lord of The Rings, owns the movie rights for His Dark Materials, and is producing the films.

Release

The first movie in the trilogy, The Golden Compass, is to be released December 7th, 2007.

Director

Chris Weitz was initially appointed as the director, but withdrew citing 'Technical challenges' as the reason for his departure. Anand Tucker was selected as the new director, but later withdrew from the project. As of now, Chris Weitz is the director of the first movie.

Screenplay

Sir Tom Stoppard wrote the original screenplay, but Chris Weitz rewrote the screenplay, which is now complete.

Budget

The film was green-lit by New Line Cinema with a budget of 90 million pounds, or approximately 180 million dollars. Originally this was 75 millions pounds or approximately 150 millions dollars.

Filming

Filming began in early September, 2006.  The film has been mostly shot in Britain, with some scenes in Svalbard and Switzerland.

Casting

Chris Weitz has stated that they're only casting British actors in an attempt to remain faithful to the books.

The part of Lyra Belacqua will be played by Dakota Blue Richards, 12, an unknown from Cambridge, England.

Open auditions were held in the first weeks of April 2006.
