Irrelivent wrote a reaction to this article, a very critical review of His Dark Materials.
When you read that review, it does seem pretty convincing, does it not? Yet this man hasn't done his homework at all. Pullman tells us that our dæmons are our souls personified. Yet we have this nonsence about a guy who has read the books:
"The most striking difference in Lyra''s world is that everyone has a daemon, which is a kind of Id/familiar/pet. Until a child is grown, the daemon can change shape at will - a mouse one moment, a tiger the next - but it takes a definite form somewhere around adolescence, and the fixed form of the daemon is some kind of reflection of the inner self of the ... what, host? Owner? .... Whatever."
Clearly this man is using a basic copy-and-paste feature most Fundamentalist Christians use. Had he read the books properly, you should see that the dæmon is the soul personified, as I have said; that they take on the shape that the ghost, which is the concious being we are; and, most importantly, we all have dæmons! This may seem like simple mistakes to some, but if you want to speak out against something, you should at least know what you are talking about. "Mr. Pullman portrays all of this as very healthy and reasonable because "The Authority" is a dreadful fellow."
I''d advise anybody, of any religion who disagrees with Pullman in this to look up the following:
Exodus 32 (All)
Deuteronomy 32:21-25
Exodus 34:12-26
Leviticus 25:42, 44-46
Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. These are the words of God, and his strongest followers. If God is so great, kind and merciful, why is he murdering the people he cares about the most. I have been told by a Christian teacher in my school that I have no reason to follow God due to fear, "like there is in such religions as Islam". Yet, these verses from the bible, the literal word of God, state otherwise. Why?
