On Scotsman.com, Gill Mills, Presentor of Radio One´s Evening Session Scotland, wrote the following about his favorite book this year:
"It has to be Donna Tartt’s The Little Friend. Where to begin? I love her use of language, every sentence is weighted and directed for maximum impact. It is unflinching, darkly observed and oddly comic in some places. Its central character, Harriet, is the flipside to Phillip Pullman’s Lyra in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Obstinate, fierce and intelligent, she expresses every murderous impulse I’ve ever had without any saccharine coating to ease the reader’s guilt. On completion, I felt, and still do, that there is a little part of Harriet lodged within me. A tremendous feat and the saviour of a 12-hour flight. "
Flipside eh? Wasn´t Lyra "fierce and intelligent" too?
