The Golden Compass Preproduction Movie

Tagged with His Dark Materials Movies 16 comments

We're proud to present the preproduction movie of The Golden Compass. It's basically a run-through of the whole movie before — as the title implies — any shooting was done, so the material consists of storyboard sketches, scene tests, and preliminary CGI. It provides a wonderful view into how the movie was out together, and come to life. Be warned, this 27 minute movie contains spoilers for those unfamiliar with the storyline.

Thanks go to our members situ, for bringing this to our attention, and Pylse, for helping us publish this.

View the preproduction movie.

Due to YouTube's limitations it has been split into 3 parts.

Really very spectacular to see this all together as a sort of build in presentation.!

It's wonderful!  Are we thinking this might be Wetiz's presentation to New Line?  I was certainly excited after watching it!

wow, very thorough. They included much more than I thought they would. LIke where Lyra goes with Iorek to find the child without the daemon. I had kind of assumed they would just cut that out for some reason. Definitely looked promising! :-)

I think that would be close to the script, but on exactly.

And also, Mrs Coulter looks bloody ugly in these drawings. I'm glad Nicole is a mighty site better looking than woman!

The interesting thing about this movie is that you get a feel for the way that they've adapted the book.

For example, the severed boy that Lyra finds isn't Tony Makarios like in the book, but it's Billy Costa.

I think these changes actually work very well.

Im really exited. I like very much. But I don't like the final interaction with Lyra, Asriel and Coulter.

If you watch, the scene wher Lyra fins the boy with the fish is Roger, but at the beginning when Lyra scapes and see Mrs. Coulter offering chocolate to the boy this is Tony!!!

Im also worried that they might don't us the coctayl party.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to the cocktail party scene, I hope very much it's in there.

I don't like the interaction between them at the end either, it's too like....'yeah whatevs' and I don't think Lyra should talk to Marisa or Asirel like that, it says in the book that she feels like she could tear out his heart here and then, so I don't like the idea of her actually talking to him. I doubt it'll be like that in the actual film. I hope.

It is also interesting that because of the fact that this is material used in the early stages of preproduction, they played it on safe with the controversial themes. In the retiring room scene, Lord Asriel doesn't mention anything about the Magisterium and the "That's heresy!" phrase from Fra Pavel doesn't show here either. Both of which we have seen in the trailer footage.
It seems as if they played it safe by removing everything controversial from this early material, but later on added little things back in.

Hmmm… very… meh. this has reassured me in some ways, but worried me in others. A lot of minor differences, which I can cope with and might help.. But still overall it makes me feel uneasy…

And if they leave in that stupid change they made whereby Iorek was banished for loosing, that will annoy me, as it's a large change in his back story.

Loved It!!!! it looks great!
but I fear not all of this will actually be on the final movie; besides I think that the final conversation with Asriel and Coulter is a huge Anticlimax, it doesn't fit at all, She´s supposed to be sooooo sad and they doesn't notice them!
Though, the art work is beutiful!! So few about witches, though=(...

Hope they doesn't include this final momentum..leave it like in the book!!

The rest looks magnificent…

I have to say, that's the most reassuring preview of the film so far. I'm a still ... let's call it cautious. But I am also more excited now about it!

Oh wow, that's bloody AMAZING! :D I am SO excited for this!! My faith has been completely restored. :D
Hoping that a lot of the stuff we talked about gets back in there- this is less than 30 minutes of film material! There's got to be some of this stuff.
Oh, and on a minutae note, I really like the daemon-cutter at Bolvangar. That was cool. Less excited about the Alethiometer though.
