Trepanning for Bliss
August 25, 2003 in His Dark Materials Books
“D'you know, people still do that?” Sir Charles Latrom says to Lyra in The Subtle Knife. Well, yes, they do. The following article explains in detail why people still think they need to drill a hole into their skull. The story of modern trepanning …

Church Times His Dark Materials Review
August 24, 2003 in His Dark Materials Books
This is a really interesting review from the Church Times. It isn't that negative about Pullman really:
Philip Pullman’s accomplishment in this great work is to have wholly reconceptualised the nature and purpose of fantasy. The function of fantasy is no longer to transport us to some unreal never-land — Narnia and Middle Earth remain the most popular destinations — from which we return with a heightened vision of our own real world and our tasks within it.

Narnia books attacked as racist and sexist
August 23, 2003 in Philip Pullman
It's an old article, but a really good one, about how Pullman calls Lewis "blatantly racist" and "monumentally disparaging of women", in his speech at the Guardian Hay festival.

August 18, 2003 in Philip Pullman
After months of waiting, rumors, and false assurations, Philip Pullman's website http://www.philip-pullman.com is finally online.
Philip Pullman hired pedalo limited, a webdesign company, to make and design his website so that he may be able to "stay in contact with his fans."
Currently the website isn't finished yet, so you can only sign up for the site's newsletter and read the complete transcript of Philip Pullman's Isis Lecture.
You can join the mailing list, for updates about the website here.

A Readers Guide Released?
August 18, 2003 in Other
There was some confusion about the release date of 'A readers guide to His Dark Materials', by Claire Squires, because although we were told by Mrs Squires that the book wasn't released yet, on Amazon.com, you can order the book here. We mailed Mrs Squires and she assured us the book hasn't been released yet and that you can only pre-order it yet.
Translating English Accents
August 18, 2003 in His Dark Materials Books
One of the most wonderful elements of His Dark Materials are certainly the different accents of the characters because they add very much to the depth of the atmosphere. But unfortunately they are also the biggest problem for translators.
A wizard with worlds
August 18, 2003 in Philip Pullman
This is an article from 2000, just before the Amber Spyglass was published on the first of November. It's a really good... interview? review? Hard to decide. It also mentions the movies :
"The film rights for the trilogy have been sold. Did he fear his books would be ruined? 'No. Waste of time. Take the money and forget it. I have no power.' "

The Amber Spyglass off the Desktop
August 16, 2003 in Philip Pullman
Just a few weeks after having sent his script of The Amber Spyglass to the publishers Philip Pullman gave this not very well known, yet highly revealing interview about his inspiration, Tolkien, Sally Lockhart and The White Mercedes. This interview took place in August 2000, at Lexicon, a small literary convention (Unicon 2000) held in Oxford, England. An edited version of this interview previously appeared in Locus #479, December 2000.
New Dark Materials book on the way
August 15, 2003 in Lyra's Oxford
This is a Newsround article about Lyra's Oxford
Author Philip Pullman has revealed he is working on a new book in the Dark Materials series.
He's already written three books about Lyra and Will and their adventures, and now a fourth is on its way in October - called Lyra's Oxford.
The Times newspaper's website reports that you don't need to have read the other three books to understand this one.
Philip Pullman weaves spell with 'His Dark Materials'
August 14, 2003 in His Dark Materials Books
This is a nice article about His Dark Materials, although it's from 2000 it also mentions the Book of Dust and Lyra's Oxford, and the movies.
"Pullman has no intention of slowing down. He hasn't ruled out revisiting Lyra and Will at a later date, and has several new projects in the works, including a dark thriller for adults.
The film rights to "His Dark Materials" have been sold. While there are no plans yet to make a movie, Pullman says he'll be happy to sit back and let someone else tell the story for a change.

Kids' films stigmatise mentally ill
August 10, 2003 in His Dark Materials Movies
This article writes about how kids' films give dangerous impressions of madness. The author mentions how mad people should be depicted in a more positive manner. It seems that the author thinks that the HIs Dark Materials Movies will do this:
"Similarly, the mother of Will, the hero of The Subtle Knife, the second of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, is described as vulnerable, distressed and having compulsive obsessions. Yet she is also depicted with sympathy and as a positive character. More important, Will provides her with emotional and practical support."

Listening Magic
August 8, 2003 in His Dark Materials Books
I found this article about the pleasures of listening to audiobooks in the car. The author recommends The Amber Spyglass, but makes the mistake of making it sound like a novel primarily aimed at children. She writes:
For [young children] and older children too, Philip Pullman's matchless The Amber Spyglass is now available in an unabridged version - nearly 15 hours of listening (BBC £29.99) and Pullman's less well known but superb thriller The Ruby in the Smoke is beautifully read by Anton Lesser (BBC £13.99)."

We are all the New JK Rowling now
August 7, 2003 in Philip Pullman
I found this article in the Guardian written by Louisa Young, the author of 'The Book of the Heart'. The article is about how almost every new promising author gets hailed as 'The New J.K. Rowling, and how this is getting out of hand. At the end of the article she writes:
"... "We are all the New JK Rowling now." Though I will myself soon be applying for the rather more exclusive (if less well-paid) position of the New Philip Pullman."
The New Pullman? Sounds good ... read the whole article below.
Randomhouse Lyra's Oxford Page
August 5, 2003 in Lyra's Oxford
Randomhouse has finally added Lyra's Oxford to their webpage, His Dark Materials.com. They write:
"Discover Lyra's Oxford, an exciting new tale set in the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials saga. This collectible hardcover volume includes a short story by Mr. Pullman, plus a fold-out map of Oxford and various "souvenirs" from the past. The book is illustrated throughout with woodcut illustrations by John Lawrence. Coming in October."
Finally Amazon Gets it Right!
August 3, 2003 in Lyra's Oxford
Finally Amazon has corrected their Lyra's Oxford page. First they said it was a Baby/Preschool book, then they changed the name to: 'A Guide of Lyra's Oxford'. Now, after just a couple of month, Amazon have finally got things right. The book's reading level is 'Young Adult ', and the book's title is, you guessed it, 'Lyra's Oxford'.
