While it would have been nice to have Mr. Desplat’s achievement recognized, too, apparently the Academy decided to be very hard on him this year—not even his “Lust, Caution” score was nominated, and it might be that the two scores cancelled each other out.

But it’s wonderful to see the effects get recognized (expected) and the truly remarkable art direction, too! Actually, it’s Mr. Gassner who has the better chance of actually winning the Oscar, as he’s an old favorite with many accomplishments under his belt, and one win. “Transformers” seem to be a lock in the effects category.

The important thing to remember is that the nominations are the REALLY important thing here, as they’re decided on by the relevant professionals within the field; the actual Oscars are a product of the vote of the entire Academy, and as their membership consists mainly of retired actors and their agents, we’re not exactly talking a high level of competence there.

Again, three (two) cheers for the nominees!

We were hardly robbed on not revieving a nomination for score, it didn’t deserve to be nominated. It wasn’t very good.

GC will win best visual effects no problem, everyone’s been raving about that.

I have no idea what Art Direction is though.

I’m glad to see those nominations. The effects were splendid, and it deserves an award for that at the very least.

Shame about the score, but what can we do? Oh well. :)

hey, people should be happy with these two nominations. films of this genre don’t necessarily ever see more than one nomination (for visual effects usually)—excluding Lord of the Rings. it’s nice to see that golden compass could actually surpass other fantasy films by getting an art direction nod. unfortunately it won’t win with competition like atonement, sweeney todd, and there will be blood. for visual effects GC actually has a chance, though transformers will most definitely not win, and pirates will present competition. as for the score, it was good by my standards, but it wasn’t amazing. plus there were better scores out there this year, it was a great movie year as a whole, so just because GC’s score was good, it wasn’t good enough to earn an oscar nod.

P.S. The academy is actually pretty competent. They’re not just a bunch of people who have no idea what their talking about.

#5 I dunno about that ROKYPA

I’m not so sure about the Academy’s competency, ROKYPA.  I mean, where’s Kate Bush’s nomination for Best Song???  She was robbed!

#6 I'm content

I’m content with the fact that TGC actually made it into the final consideration. i can’t wait to see it on tv. u know when they show the clips, it would be hilarious if they showed the bear fight. imagine the crowd’s reaction to the jaw scene!!

I’m totally agree with anna11: we have to be happy for these nominations! I didn’t expected nothing from the soundtrack\song part, since in my opinion it wasn’t very good at all...Sure enough, not for Oscar, and not with such competition!
