MTV draws our attention to the following: Just as New Line has stepped up its marketing campaign for its upcoming movie "The Golden Compass," the film studio finds itself with a little competition — from a DVD that Koch Entertainment plans to put out called "Beyond the Golden Compass." New Line filed a copyright-infringement suit Thursday (November 15) in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, claiming the Koch version was a "cynical and transparent effort to unfairly compete with and capitalize on the massive publicity and promotional effort" aimed at the $180 million version, starring Nicole Kidman, by insinuating the two releases were related. New Line wants to prevent the knockoff from coming out and $10 million in damages.

#1 DVD Worth Your TIme
Just as this story broke, I had my copy from Amazon on its way. It arrived today and I viewed it, and I intend to write a longer review for this site, but let me just come right out and say that it’s a pretty good overview of Pullman’s world, including an interview with Pullman, and several scholars and writers who lend their expertise and shed light on Pullman and His Dark Materials. Though there are recreations from the books, they are contextual and necessary to explain a little about what the DVD is addressing.
I think this DVD is especially useful to new viewers/readers who will want a visual, not textual, overview of Pullman and His Dark Materials. For the general audience, then, I’d say it’s a worthwhile addition to any library’s offerings and, if you want to spring for the bucks, worth adding to your own.
Please keep in mind that Pullman participated in this project and it’s one of only two instances in which any footage of him is available in interview form. For that alone, it’s worth the price of admission.
