Variety reports: The weekend also marked another success story for "The Golden Compass," thanks to a socko $10 million Japanese launch -- including $2.5 million in sneak screenings Feb. 23 and 24. That brought the foreign cume to $272 million, or nearly four times the domestic take in a performance that underlines the international appeal of fantasy pics.
It was a bit of good news for New Line, faced with last week's announcement that it will be absorbed into Warner Bros. Time Warner president Jeff Bewkes has already said that future New Line pics won't be financed by selling off foreign rights, as was done with "Compass."

This is marvelous news and definitely gives a boost to our hopes that Warner Brothers will greenlight the next two adaptations! Hopefully the outrageous success of the film in Japan will prove to studio executives that success in America is now irrelevant to a franchise, especially one such as HDM.

I am convinced that HDM would have been a fabulous anime adventure in the hands of Miyazaki. There are so many elements of the HDM universe that dovetails in with many of Miyazaki’s earlier features.
I also believe that there would have been must less hesitation to frankly present the religious angle of the stories.

Wow I thought of Miyazaki doing HDM as a movie too. I mean, the main character is a girl, and then there has to be a boy. I especially thought it in The Amber Spyglass chapter of the world of the dead.
