ohhh yay :D Despite everything, I’m a little more excited for the movie now.
Favorite part? Asriel and Stelmaria walking into the new world. Too bad it won’t be included :(

Why do they insist with this “last Golden Compass”??First, it is an alethiometer; second,it isn’t the last in the world! :/
Anyway, they seem really good...And I like that part ^ too!

I love the second and the fourth trailer the most. :) But I also agree with Lyrael on the “last golden compass“-issue… It’s too much. They’re overrating the compass’ abilities…

#6 Another One

There’s also another one, I just saw it on TV, and it has a lot of new dialouge and footagem my favorite being Lyra on the Gyptian boat saying, “You getting scared, Pan?” right before the spy-flys come.  I really want that one to be posted somewhere!

#7 Must Be Found

It’s interesting how they’ve manipulated Kidman’s line “She must be found”, which first appeared in the original trailer. Now you have the variations:

Trailer #5—He must be found.
Trailer #6—It must be found.

Who ever came up with the line “Who ever can read the Golden Compass has the power to rule the universe” should be smacked. Hard. >=( There are plenty of people that can read it and they are nothing more than old scholars. And it isn’t the last, the book mentions the use of at least 3.

Of all the things they changed, if I could tell them what to change back and it could only be one minor thing… I think I would have the return the name of the Golden Compass to it’s rightful name of the Alethiometer.

I mean, am I the only one who nearly creamed themselves to hear that word being said in the first trailor? And they keep changing what it does. =/ “It tells the truth” (YAY) “It tells of things to come” (BOOOOO!!!) “It measures the truth” (Still wrong, but eh, close enough)

*grumble*

Awesomeness, I love all the new footage.

They are of course blatantly misrepresenting the nature of the alethiometer (the name change, I’m sure, is just for the previews), and the nature of the story by making it a quest for the alethiometer.  Frankly, the alethiometer is cool and important, but it doesn’t play a direct central plot role.  But obviously they’re just trying to hook people, who won’t remember the difference when they see the movie.  Clearly the change to making it the only alethiometer is a real change, but frankly it’s a good change.  It’s much more dramatic for her to be the only one, and for the Magisterium to have destroyed the others.  Fra Pavel and Teukros Basilides made Lyra’s ability seem much less special.

#10 "Rule The Universe"???

“Rule the Universe”?  WTF??? Let me think, was the alethiometer forged in Mordor by Sauron? Must it be thrown into the fires of Mt. Doom to destroy it?  Does Lyra have big furry feet and a chubby daemon named Samwise?  Come on New Line, we know better than that!!!  HDM is an entirely different series. However, it has been confirmed that Lyra and Gyptians are gonna be chased by Ring(Compass) Wraiths and cliff Orcs in the next TV spot and Lord Asriel’s name has indeed been changed to Aragorn. New Line has done a baaaaaaaaaaad thing here!!!

It looks extremely cool. And better than the trailers I have seen.

But indeed I’d have to agree with consciousparticles that making the golden compass into some kind of master Ring is a bit silly really. And makes the apparatus waaay to important.

#12 alethiometer

The Alethiometer is mentioned in the book as a truth meter by the master of jordan colledge, and it has the ability to tell if someone is telling the truth or not. and to a certain extent can tell the future outcome if asked the right question.

the book says that there may have been two others besides the one lyra has but makes no mention if they are still in existance at this point in time.

#13 Help! (on why the PG-13)

My 6.5-yr old daughter is begging me to take her to see The Golden Compass.  Any advice on the scary PG-13 rating?

I steer my kids away from nightmare-fuel movie & TV images.  But some web-trolling suggests the rating has more to do with the MPAA’s conservative bias and the bent noses that many religious conservatives are getting over the movie, and less to do with any actual depictions of disturbing violence.

Is that about right?  Or should I wait for the DVD to show her when she’s a little older?

(For perspective, she’s a very precocious 6.5-year-old, preferring the older, more “grown-up” fairy tales like the Brother’s Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Tales of the Arabian Knights, and Tolkien over, say, Disney [no offense].)

Thanks for any help.

(P.S. “Just go yourself first, and decide” is easier said than done, or else I’d have done just that.)
