The Golden Compass Trailer Launched

Tagged with The Golden Compass 42 comments

The final trailer of The Golden Compass has just been launched at a big event held at Rockfeller Center, NYC hosted by Sam Elliot. The trailer has just been shown on giant screens above the ice rink at 8:30 EST. Subsequentially, the trailer has been released online for the rest of us who aren't there at the party. Watch it here below.

For other formats go to Yahoo! movies.

The trailer shows how much the post-production has progressed and it feels very polished. Dæmon CGI, dialogue, lighting – it's all much more finished than any footage we've seen before.

As some of you have noted, some scenes in this trailer are from the final three chapters of The Golden Compass which Chris Weitz said were moved to The Subtle Knife. Deborah Forte – Producer – confirmed that some of the material in this trailer is from The Subtle Knife.

some parts of that trailer look suspiciosly like they’re from the final chapter of the book

#2 Wow!

It looks like the alethiometer has become the golden compass, but otherwise… wow. I am impressed. Love the music, love the daemons.

It is possible that this trailer was made before the decision was made to remove the final three chapters from the adaptation.  This trailer was probably well on its way out by the time the changes were beginning to be applied to the story.

and maybe the “changes” made are really just a big surprise!

#7 WTF

I agree Asrielman! What’s going on?  I think New Line has shot themselves in the foot.  After their fallout with Peter Jackson over LOTR they’ve made damn sure they had total control over this project.  It’s a shame (sham?)!  Emmerich and Ordesky are not creative people- just creepy Hollywood execs who want another LOTR to (new) line their coffers.  Well, HDM is no LOTR!!!  And any real fan of both series knows the difference. I was really looking forward to this film, but now I pretty depressed. Oh well, we’ll always have the books.

#8 Put the trailer looks sweet!!!

Though I’m skeptical, the trailer looks gorgeous!  Those are clearly shots from the last chapters toward the end of the trailer.  What’s CW talking about?

#9 this really shows that there isnt a commitment to a trilogy

this really shows that there isnt a commitment to a trilogy

think about it, the only reason they would cut out the ending cliffhanger is because there will be closure just incase there wont be any support or financing for a sequel.  it makes sense.  if the movie fails (which in all reality it might) they would be able to cut their losses and accept that they might have made a solid movie.  it will probably end with the battle of iorek for his kingdom.

The trailer is BEAUTIFUL. The CGI looks really good.

#11 Hmmmm

With the movie coming out and being on break from college, I decided to re-read the trilogy to brush myself up todate so I can tell what was in the movie and what was in the book. I finished it in 2 weeks, and only because I put the last book off because I didn’t want to get to the end.

Anyway, “Lyra, come with me!” “I’ll never be yours, never!” Hmmm, yeah, that’s totally not in the book. Heck, Mrs. Coulter didn’t even see her after Lord Asriel opened the bridge. Of course, somethings are bound to be different, but HDM is my favorite trilogy, and some of the changes I’ve seen in the three trailors that have been released has left me a bit unsure.

Naturally, I will still go see the movie. I just hope they didn’t mess it up too bad, or I’ll go home and fall asleep crying while hugging my books. :( I’ve been waiting for far too many years for it to be made into a movie only to have some money grubbers screw it up!

who is that guy playing Lord Boreal?  you see him and his snake daemon just after you see Christopher Lee.

and why can’t they just call it the alethiometer ffs :/

I really hope that this does the book justice and that new line haven’t butchered it.

First of all, the release party was very cool.  Sam Elliot!  Why can’t they just call it the alethiometer?  Why?  How stupid do they think people are?  Because one stupid editor screwed it up ten years ago, it’s now being changed in the movie??  I like that they’re making the Magisterium so big and nasty, and clearly it’s religious in nature.  Putting so much focus on it so early is a bit unsubtle, but it’s fine.  Ian McKellen will be fine. “She’s running the Magisterium?” WTF?  That would totally and completely screw everything up for the rest of the series.  The change to the end isn’t so totally terrible, as long as they make TSK, because it means there’ll be more to do in TSK and more for Lord Asriel to do.  But it was such a beautiful ending to the first book, and it looks so cool - why do we have to wait two years?  And what would have been the harm of keeping the ending - having a cliffhanger would encourage people to see the next one, just like LOTR.  Seriously, this Golden Compass thing is stupid, and they also seem to be overstating its importance.  The alethiometer is important to people more because it’s a sign of Lyra’s special destiny than on its own merits.  It’s Lyra who’s special.  I’ve been looking through a quiz book about the movie I got at the release party, which reflects the old version, and it seems to have been almost perfectly faithful.  Why screw with it now?

I definitely think the trailer for the movie looks really good.  I think this is a movie I’d be interested in even if I hadn’t read the books.

That said it’s clear there have been some deviations from the book.  New Line desperately wants the next LOTR and they put their money on His Dark Materials to be it.  The main changes are softening the anti-religous tones and upping the action.  Where this will leave the story we don’t yet know.

I do want to remind everyone that Peter Jackson deviated from his source material too - especially on things like upping the action.  The fight scenes in the LOTR books is mostly short and rather boring.

We can have a great movie that does deviate from the great book.  I suggest we hold our judgement till we see the final product.

I’m almost certain the parts where Lyra, et al refer to the Alethiomether as The Golden Compass and the scene where Lyra mentions that Coulter is head of the Magisterium have been dubbed. Did you notice that NONE of those scenes showed the actors actually say “golden compass”? I’m assuming it’s this way so the audience doesn’t get confused. It’s won’t be referred as that in the film (I don’t think) because in all the previous trailers and previews it has been called the Alethiomter.

Did you see the part where Roger fell… I’m gonna cry when I see that in the movie. :’)
I’m not fond of the glowing symbols of the ALETHIOMETER (read: not golden compass), though. And what the master says: “It lets you glimpse what to come”. The hell it doesn’t, it tells her the truth, just like he said in the other trailer. Sheesh…

Other than that it looks really great. :)

# October 10, 2007 17:16 by AnneMaria

#24 I'll tell you why...

Why is New Line emphasizing the “compass” itself in the trailers?

Because they’re hoping audiences will compare it to the One Ring.  Remember the beginning of the teaser trailer, when a falling ring turned into the compass?  Wow.  Subtle, New Line.  Subtle.

They want another fantasy cash-cow.  LOTR worked, so they’re building off of that.

Why take the final three chapters out?  Because they promise a sequel, and New Line doesn’t have faith that the first movie will make enough money.

I’m a filmmaker, and even I hate these scheming hollywood execs…

# October 10, 2007 17:49 by amorgan

#25

seriously, i created an account just so i could say how FURIOUS i am that they took out the last three chapters. just… why take that out? the whole narrative leads up to that moment. there’s so much going on the subtle knife already.

if they were going to cut it out of the film, they shouldn’t have put those scenes in the trailer. that’s such a cop out. ugh, i knew they were going to screw this up.

Trailer gives me chills.

Movie won’t.

No super awesome ending.

Lame.

I’m mad.

#27

The first half is kind of annoying with the variations and shortening of what was already in the extended preview. But the new stuff is great! And I do hope they don’t call it the golden compass in the movie, it looks like they won’t though.

Fantastic trailer, I get chills at the end. Too bad every time I see it there’s a few bits of that scene that I won’t get to see for about TWO YEARS. Great job New Line, just when we’re all excited about this amazing new trailer they come in and say “Oh, sorry, but we’re moving those scenes to the next movie. IF there is one. So you’ll have to wait a few more years. But at least you have this shiny new trailer to keep you occupied!” I hate this…

I’m sorry, there’s no way around it, this new trailer sucks and has me MUCH less excited about seeing the movie.

This is to the whiners: Heavens, when will people stop whining and complaining? you would think this is the first adaptation of any book, ever.  It is an ADAPTATION, the dialogue will not be word for word, some will be removed, others will be added and a few will be reconstructed.  Not everything in the book will be in the movie and not everything in the movie will be in the book.  A book is very different to a movie, it has to move much more than the book and no, not all the characters will be as you imagined, the director has his own way of seeing the book, same as everybody else.  Sheesh, is it possible to think greatly first before yammering on about how unHDM or what not it is not about?

You don’t have to go see the movie, the book is still being published, stick wirh the book, nobody is forcing you to go, you WILL BE PAYING TO SEE IT.  The studios are courteous enough to Philip Pullman to allow him input but he has been paid to allow them to make a movie they want.

“Don’t ruin it, they’ll ruin it, blah, blah, blah” chill out, pick up the book and let the movie be.

A simple explanation seems to be going over people’s heads.

Amorgan, sure you are a filmmaker, isn’t it amazing how your name is in lights?!

I guess this is what happens when people who went out to buy a book, read it, loved it start to think they own it with the author deluding them that they are part of what made it what it is.

Read your books and leave the movie be, sheesh!

Kind of a shame to hear that the last three chapters were moved from the movie, would have been nice if they could have at least cut them out from the trailer as well >.< Not really against the last three chapters being moved, because I can see where it could actually be useful, since TSK start off kindly slowly and suddenly. Oh well, maybe they’ll throw in those last scenes as a preview for TSK in a special edition DVD.

#34 I don't know what to think anymore.

Part of me is excited about the film, and the other part of me is enormously disappointed.
I just don’t know whether this film is going to do the books justice or not.
And yes, I also noticed that the end of the trailer looks like it is showing the last three chapters of the book, even though CW said they weren’t including them.
VERY CONFUSED!!!

#35 Okay,

Can I just say that everyone needs to chill out about the last three chapters being moved to the second movie? First off, I’m sure however they end the first movie without those scenes will be good… do you really think New Line would make a big decision like this and then turn around and do a half-a** job on it? No. Secondly, the Subtle Knife is the shortest book and has the least amount going on in it. This will translate into a longer Subtle Knife which will balance all of the movies out. Third, and this is the most important: In Lord of The Rings The Two Towers, at the end of that book Frodo encounters Shelob (the spider) and is captured at Cirith Ungol. For those of you who remember, Peter Jackson and New Line cut that entire ending of the 2nd movie because they felt it would be anti-Climactic when coming right after the huge battle at Helm’s Deep. Instead they put that in the middle of the third movie, with the result of much better flow. The continuity of the three films worked out much better for this change. This change in the Golden Compass is almost for the exact same reason. If you take LOTR for an example, you will realize that the decision makes sense and could actually make the movie adaptations better. So, seriously chill out. And anyway, these three books are really one story. When all three are out on DVD you will be able to watch them back to back and those scenes will still be there at the beginning of Subtle Knife.

I hate that they have changed Alethiometer for golden compass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

# October 13, 2007 02:28 by Ardanawen

They haven’t changed “alethiometer” for “golden compass” - it’s just dub overs to tie the title into the trailer - you don’t see the actors actually saying “golden compass” but we have seen them saying “alethiometer.” They need to have relevance for the title so it’s not surprising and is smart.

i pray that they say alethiometer in the film.  it’s such a small thing to ask.  kids all over the place learned the meanings of tons of new & invented words during the harry potter series.. i hope new line gives its audience more credit and changes it back!

I really think people need to calm down. There is so much criticism coming from here, and when it all comes down to it, it is just people being picky. Get over it. It is inevitable that there will be changes. And as I look up at earlier posts I see this: ““Lyra, come with me!” “I’ll never be yours, never!” Hmmm, yeah, that’s totally not in the book.”
Well let me say this in return: “Whoop-de-doo Basil!” Does it really matter? It’s not as if they ghanged Lyra to a guy or something crucial like that!
So my message to everyone: Calm down and stop being so darn picky!
