Yes, right here on HisDarkMaterials.org, the number 1 fansite for the books, the films, and now the game! New Line have commissioned Sega to create what looks to be a fantastic 3rd Person adventure, and by the screenies, it’s going to rival the film! Although, admittedly, we don’t have a lot to go on at this stage, it’s still pretty impressive as to the sheer scale of New Line’s commitment to this project; they’re looking to create a whole franchise with films, merchandise, and now those trigger-happy folks among us can sate their passion for technology and BE all their favourite characters! Now, this may just be me, but I’m really excited by this (as if you couldn’t guess!). The confidence that New Line has in bringing His Dark Materials to everybody, not those who just read and liked the books, is most certainly spreading, and definitely throughout our community here; this is a very very good thing!
So lets just dissect these screenshots a little bit. Okay, I admit it, I don’t know the first thing about computer games. Well, that’s a lie. I know that some are based on films. And that’s about it. Sorry, I’m just a film-lover at heart. Anyway. Just as with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it’s obvious that the game will be a third-person kind of game. Now, I don’t know about games, but in a film, having a third person look really helps to give a sense of space around the interaction, something that is definitely wanted here. Let’s just take a look at the detail, while we’re here. With Iorek in the snow, you can see the reflection of the sunlight off the ice behind him, and that’s impressive. Detail like that immerses people. Okay, so some of the interactive things like Iorek himself and the wolves could do with a little work, certainly as far as detail goes, but remember, this is a work in progress, and so far, I’m impressed.
Okay, moving on now- let’s take a look at Lyra. This is definitely one of my favourite screenshots here, because it shows just what Lyra does; she’s quite innocently balancing on a rooftop, which matches almost to the letter what she did with Roger at Jordan College. And is that a Zeppelin I see in the background? And I just love the atmosphere that screenie gives off, it has a real sense of presence and almost a majestic feel to the buildings.
Then there’s my definite all-time favourite, from what I’ve seen here. From my limited experience in games, and by nearly-obsessive experience in films, this looks like it’s a cinematic! And it looks absolutely amazing! It’s instantly recognisable as a city, which is important, but at the same time, it looks completely different from any city in our world, and this is important, because it shows that there is a real difference, as well as a parallel, between our world and Lyra’s.
