Biography

I live in Williamsburg, Virginia and spend most of my time in front of a 30-inch Apple monitor, my window to the world, since I’m usually writing up to three books at any given time. Though I’ve worked largely in nonfiction, I’m now branching out into fiction, which is a big change of pace for me.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy working with artists by helping them promote their work, putting on exhibits nationwide, organizing charity events using their art as a draw, and putting together book projects with them.

Writing about Philip Pullman is an interesting experience for me because the more I learn about his work, the more I realize that I’ve only scratched the surface. At a time when so many novelists don’t stretch themselves to tackle big themes, Pullman embraces them: His canvas is the universe and multi-worlds, and there’s a wealth of information in His Dark Materials that stimulates thought and discussion, sparking the imagination of children and adults alike. We need more Pullmans, more storytellers par excellence, because they are the exceptions that make us think and remind us of our humanity and obligations thereof.
