The Book of Dust is a novel by Philip Pullman which is currently being written and is supposed to be a sequel to His Dark Materials. It was originally intended as a companion novel to the trilogy focusing on secondary characters such as Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, but is now supposed to tell about Lyra 4-5 years after the events of The Amber Spyglass. The story about Lee and Iorek is to be published on its own as a book called Once Upon a Time in the North. As the title suggests the Books of Dust will concentrate on the subject of Dust and, according to Pullman, it will also contain a response to the critics who accuse him of portraying religion exclusively in a negative light. Pullman has also mentioned that the Book of Dust will be a different story than His Dark Materials and not a continuation of it as such.

Publication

The book's release date is uncertain since Philip Pullman has been working on other projects in the meantime, but Pullman has said at the Oxford Literary Festival in 2007 that the Book of Dust could be published around 2009.
