- Austria, Finland and Sweden entered the European Union.
- Tatachilla Lutheran College officially opened at McLaren Vale, South Australia.
- Polish Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak resigns from Parliament and is replaced by ex-communist Jozef Oleksy.
- For the first time in 26 years, no British soldiers patroled the streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
- While on trial for murder, O.J. Simpson put on a pair of gloves that were found soaked with blood at the murder scene. The gloves appeared not to fit, prompting defense attorney Johnny Cochran to remark: "If the gloves don't fit, you must acquit."
- Lisa Clayton completed her 10-month solo circumnavigation from the Northern Hemisphere.
- Fabio Casartelli, an Italian cyclist, died in a crash during the Tour de France.
- Microsoft released Windows 95.
- DVD, an optical disc storage media format, was announced.
- Quebec separatists narrowly lost a referendum for a mandate to negotiate independence from Canada.
- The Supreme Court of Argentina ordered the extradition of Erich Priebke, ex-S.S. captain.
- U.S. President Bill Clinton signed a highway bill that ends the federal 55 mph speed limit.
- Nu-Metal band Slipknot was founded.
- Fred West, an English serial killer committed suicide.
