In Lyra's world, the battle was fought between the Danes and the French, instead of between the Mexicans and the Texans. Lee Scoresby used to reenact the battle as a child in Texas. His dæmon, Hester, would usually assume the form of a mockingbird, often a cougar or wolf, and once or twice a rattlesnake.
