Boatman

In the World of the Dead, the Boatman is an immortal being who ferries ghosts across the river from the Suburbs of the Dead to the Land of the Dead. He is equivalent to Charon in Greek mythology. He is dispassionate and jaded, unmoved by all the pleas for bargaining, but he is not unkind. It is physically impossible for him to ferry a dæmon to the Land of the Dead, so Lyra has to leave Pantalaimon behind.
