A deceiving man in Will's Oxford who has access to a window into Will's world. He has seen Lyra work the Alethiometer and realizes its value. Known as Sir Charles Latrom in Will's World, he is the ally and lover of Mrs. Coulter, Lyra's mother. While Lyra is in Will's world, Sir Charles offers Lyra a ride to where she can "meet her brother," and steals the Alethiometer from her, unbeknownst to Lyra. In an exchange bargain, he attempts to get the Subtle Knife from Will but fails. After breaking into his house, Lyra and Will regain the Alethiometer, and Mrs. Coulter eventually poisons him. His dæmon is a serpent.
