Probably the word for Brandy in Lyra's World, an example of esoteric renaming.

This liquor is shared by the Master of Jordan College and the Librarian when dealing with troubling matters. We see them partake of this liquor after Lord Asriel's departure from the Retiring Room in Jordan College .

The word sounds similar to the Danish word for brandy or schnapps (brændevin) and to the German word for grape brandies (Branntwein). Literally, Branntwein means "burnt wine".
