Lyra gains scientist Mary Malone’s attention by first asking her when the Bronze Age was and then announcing in response to Mary’s answer, 5,000 years ago, that the trepanned skulls in the Pitt-Rivers Museum are mislabeled. The display dates them as Bronze Age relics, but the alethiometer says one belonged to a sorcerer who lived 33,254 years ago.

The Bronze Age is considered as beginning in roughly 3300 BC when more complex societies began to emerge in the Near East, especially in Egypt and Mesopotamia; the name derives from the increasing use of bronze in the manufacture of tools and ornaments.
