The city of Cambridge is an old English university town and the administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. It lies approximately 50 miles (80 km) north-northeast of London and is surrounded by a number of smaller towns and villages. It is also at the heart of the high-technology centre known as "Silicon Fen". According to the 2001 United Kingdom census, the City's population was 108,863 (including 22,153 students).

Cambridge is best known for the University of Cambridge, the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world, which includes the renowned Cavendish Laboratory, King's College Chapel, and the Cambridge University Library. The University grew out of an association of scholars in the city of Cambridge that was formed, early records suggest, in 1209 by scholars leaving Oxford after a dispute with local townsfolk there.

The universities of Oxford and Cambridge are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of English society, the two universities also have a long history of rivalry with each other.
