The I Ching, a divination system used by Mary Malone, originated in China. Mary seems to have an interest in China; in the appendix to the tenth anniversary edition of The Amber Spyglass, she compares the way that the movements of the mulefa's trunks change the meaning of words in their language to the tonal inflections of Chinese.
