Cittàgazze

A haunted city, inhabited by Spectres, in the world where Will and Lyra first meet. Cittàgazze means "city of magpies" in Italian named for the birds that steal their food, just as the city's occupants have been stealing from other worlds for centuries. The Torre Degli Angeli is located in Cittàgazze, and it is the home town of the Subtle Knife wielders. It is where Will receives the Knife and is taught how to use it. There are no adults in the city, as they have all been driven off by the Spectres, and the children live there alone, oblivious to the Spectres. The city is called Ci'gazze by some of the children.

The city itself is described as having a Mediterranean look to it (which makes sense since all the names are Italian), with palm trees and nice warm climate. The houses are also described as being white, and there are lots of cafés and dining places. The city is surrounded by hills, and it has an ocean harbour.

Cittàgazze is more like our world in many ways than like Lyra's, since it has cola, refrigerators and corn flakes.

Cittàgazze is also the name of the oldest His Dark Materials forum, part of HisDarkMaterials.org, where many His Dark Materials fans discuss not only the novels but also more personal topics, such as music and movies. It has over 10,000 users and over 300,000 articles.
