According to HDM:

The first woman to have gained conciousness, and was tricked by the Authority into believing that she and Adam were created by the Authority. After committing Original Sin their daemons assumed their true forms.

Chrstian Belief

By eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge (Book of Genesis), she and Adam committed Original Sin.

Lyra's Connection

Lyra is prophesied to be the second Eve, destined to again be tempted, as Eve was. In HDM, Mary Malone "plays the serpent" meaning that she is the snake that tempted Eve when she tempts Lyra.
