At the Byanroping, gyptian king John Faa reacts to Raymond van Gerrit's complaint that the gyptians shouldn’t be taking the risks associated with harboring Lyra by reminding him of times when Lord Asriel has come to their aid. One example he cites is Asriel’s rescue of two gyptian children during the floods of ’53.

In the winter of 1953, the Fens of our world suffered significant damage during flooding that began January 31 and ended the next day, February 1, 1953. Over 300 people on England’s coasts died, and 20,000 were evacuated. Industry, farmlands, and infrastructures in these areas were devastated as well. While efforts have been made to prevent a recurrence, the low-lying Fens remains especially vulnerable.
