Giacomo Paradisi was the bearer of the Subtle Knife before Will. When Will fought with Tullio at the Torre degli Angeli, Giacomo Paradisi was the old man who helped Will with his wounds, using an ointment commonly found in the drugstores of our world, and told him an abbreviated story of the Subtle Knife, its origins and rules, et cetera. Shortly after Lyra and Will took leave of the Torre degli Angli, the tower was no longer protected, and Paradisi killed himself in order to avoid being eaten by the Spectres.
