God

God is thought by all monotheistic religions to be an all-powerful creator. In "His Dark Materials," the one who claims to be God is the Authority. However, according to a group of rebel angels, including Xaphania, the Authority was merely the first angel to exist. When the other angels came into existance, he lied and told them that he had created them, gaining his power and place at the heat of monotheistic religion. The same group of rebel angels that disbelieve his omnipotence had tried to overthrow the Authority millenia ago, unsuccessfully. Lord Asriel leads a new rebellion to attempt to replace the Authority's fraudulent Kingdom of Heaven with a Republic of Heaven.

It is not known if the authority was actually God, or merely an imposter of God.
