When the townies and collegers of Lyra's Oxford joined together to attack the brickburners’ children in the Claybeds, all involved end up caked in mud and “resembled a flock of shrieking golems” (NL 36/GC 35).

Golems are creatures in Jewish legends of our world. They are created by humans and resemble people, and are brought to life by employing the name of God. In many tales, while it is easy to set them on a task, it is not so simple to stop them.[1]
