Gomez, Father Luis

The youngest member of the Consistorial Court of Discipline and a practitioner of pre-emptive penance, Father Gomez volunteers to be Lyra's assassin when the Court's head, Father MacPhail, proposes her murder as a means of insuring that the girl does not re-enact the fall into temptation of Eve.

MacPhail grants Gomez pre-emptive absolution before sending the priest to track the movements of Mary Malone, who the alethiometer has identified as the one who will play the serpent to Lyra as Eve.

Gomez's journey takes him through our world and the world of Cittàgazze before it ends in the mulefa's world, where he commandeers a tualapi to serve as transport and waits for a chance to kill Lyra.

His plans are thwarted by the arrival of the angel Balthamos, who uses the last of his strength to drown the man.

Gomez's corpse is devoured by a family of huge blue lizards. His daemon was a beetle.
