A renowned explorer immersed in investigating Dust. He is rumored to be a shaman whose tribal Tartar name is Jopari, an alias of of John Parry. It is his duty to find the bearer of the Subtle Knife and inform him of his critical role in the fate of the universe. In TGC/NL, Chapter 2, is theorized to be heading an expedition in Svalbard that has gone awry. This expedition is said to be the first to discover the “city in the sky” mentioned at the meeting in the Retiring Room. At this meeting, Lord Asriel shows the Scholars a false representation of the severed head of Grumman, who was once a Scholar of Jordan. The Tartars are blamed for this savage act.
