After Mrs. Coulter abducts Lyra from the world of Cittàgazze, she takes her to this mountainous region where she hides out in a cave.

Having heard from Lee Scoresby that in the mountains of the Himalayas the snow never melts, Iorek Byrnison leads a contingent of armoured bears here after the ice melt renders life on Svalbard difficult.

When the angel Baruch locates this site as where Lyra is being held, Will begins his journey in Lyra's world to the Himalayas, determined to rescue his friend. Here too head the forces of the Magisterium and those of the Republic of Heaven, both determined to capture Lyra. Both are unsuccessful, arriving just after the Himalayan child Ama uses a potion to awaken Lyra, the Gallivespian spy Tialys spurs Coulter, and Will takes Lyra into another world.
