Iofur Raknison is the king of the Panserbjørne of Svalbard, and an usurper who had supposedly engineered the downfall of the righful king, Iorek Byrnison. He is a vain and foolish ruler who builds an ornate marble palace in an effort to become more like humans.
Iofur longs to have his own dæmon, and this leaves him open to manipulation by Mrs. Coulter and, later, Lyra Belacqua. His desire to be something he is not is what leads to his downfall. Above anything, Iofur wants a dæmon, and so when he is placed in charge of the imprisonment of Lord Asriel and also imprisons Lyra, she manages to trick him into giving Iorek Byrnison, whom he had deposed, a fair fight for the crown, saying that whoever won the match would be able to keep her, Lyra, as a dæmon. Iorek defeats him in the duel to the death. The suffix -son means son of so Iofur is the son of Rakni.
Iofur is called Ragnar Sturlusson in the film adaption to avoid confusion between Iorek.
- Note/random trivia* Pullman made a typo in the third book "The Amber Spyglass." In the later pages of chapter fifteen, Iorek and Will are discussing the knife and Iorek says to Will, "I think I've been as foolish as Iofur Rakinson," instead of Raknison.
