Originally, the Jewish people, or Jews, were Israelites living in the Middle East, who spoke Hebrew and followed the religion of Judaism. The term now includes the millions of people living around the world who have Jewish ancestors, whether or not they are still following Judaism, as well as converts to the religion from different ethnic backgrounds.
