John Keats (31 October, 1795 - February 23, 1821) was one of the main poets of the English Romantic Movement. He was criticized a lot, and his careful word choice and imagery are one of the main charateristics of his poems.

An interesting fact about his life is that, following his own last wishes, he was buried under a tomb stone reading "Here lies one whose name was writ in water.". His name is not engraved in the tomb stone.

In The Subtle Knife (Chapter 4), Mary Malone quotes him: "Capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts without any irritable reaching after fact and reason." This describes the state of mind Lyra uses to read the alethiometer. Nothing else is said about Keats, except that Will and Lyra sometimes think about him later on, and how he knew about this state of mind.
